Epidemiological pattern, incidence, and outcomes of COVID-19 in liver transplant patients

Jordi Colmenero et al.

Summary: This study revealed that liver transplant patients have a higher risk of contracting COVID-19, but their mortality rate is lower than the general population. Baseline immunosuppression containing mycophenolate was identified as an independent predictor of severe COVID-19, especially at higher doses.

Summary: SOT recipients with COVID-19 commonly present with symptoms such as fever, cough, diarrhea, and upper respiratory symptoms, with mild and moderate disease forms being predominant. Common therapeutic interventions include hospitalization, lowering of immunosuppression, and prophylactic anticoagulation.

A Report of 85 Cases of COVID-19 and Abdominal Transplantation From a Single Center: What Are the Associated Factors With Death Among Organ Transplantation Patients

Seyed Ali Malekhosseini et al.

Summary: This study reports the epidemiology of COVID-19 among recipients of organ transplantation and evaluates factors associated with death. Among liver, kidney, kidney-pancreas, and liver-kidney recipients, a total of 85 patients were found to have acquired COVID-19, with common symptoms including fever, cough, myalgia, and fatigue. One-third of the patients had oxygen saturation below 90% on admission, and 20% of patients died, with higher mortality rates observed in pediatric patients and those with low albumin levels. Low albumin levels were found to be associated with a higher risk of death in transplant recipients with COVID-19.

Biomarkers of Cytokine Release Syndrome Predict Disease Severity and Mortality From COVID-19 in Kidney Transplant Recipients

Ilies Benotmane et al.

Summary: This study analyzed clinical characteristics and prognosis of kidney transplant recipients with COVID-19, finding that early elevations of C-reactive protein and interleukin-6 were significantly associated with disease severity and mortality, highlighting the importance of regularly monitoring cytokine storm biomarkers to improve clinical outcomes.

COVID-19 in solid organ transplant recipients: A systematic review and meta-analysis of current literature

Mohammed A. Raja et al.

Summary: A systematic review and meta-analysis of SOT recipients with SARS-CoV-2 infection revealed a high hospital admission rate and mortality rate. Common symptoms included fever and cough, with the majority of recipients requiring hospital treatment. Use of immunosuppressive medications decreased, while treatments varied.

COVID-19 in immunocompromised patients: A systematic review of cancer, hematopoietic cell and solid organ transplant patients

Jennifer A. Belsky et al.

Summary: Severe COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2 has a greater impact on immunocompromised patients such as cancer and solid organ transplant recipients, leading to higher comorbidities and poorer hospital outcomes. However, hematopoietic cell transplant recipients and pediatric cancer patients tend to have clinical presentations and outcomes similar to the general population.

SARS-CoV-2-specific serological and functional T cell immune responses during acute and early COVID-19 convalescence in solid organ transplant patients

Alexandre Fava et al.

Summary: Protective humoral and T cell immune responses specific against SARS-CoV-2 have been reported among both immunocompetent and solid organ transplant (SOT) patients with COVID-19. Despite initial differences in IgG seroconversion rates, SOT patients ultimately achieve comparable functional immune responses as the general population after moderate/severe COVID-19.

COVID-19 in Lung Transplant Recipients

Jonathan Messika et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 infection in the French cohort of lung transplant patients was severe, with most cases requiring hospitalization and a survival rate of 85.7%. Among the critically ill patients, invasive mechanical ventilation was required for over half, and thrombotic events occurred in 4 patients. Overweight was significantly associated with the risk of death.
