Soil nutrient supply and tree species drive changes in soil microbial communities during the transformation of a multi-generation Eucalyptus plantation

Yuxing Xu et al.

Summary: The intensive management of Eucalyptus plantations has raised concerns about their impact on the environment and society, particularly regarding the transformation of monoculture plantation cutover areas. This study investigated how different transformation patterns of Eucalyptus plantations affected soil microbial communities and functions. The results showed that the transformation pattern of Eucalyptus x Manglietia glauca Blume mixed plantations significantly improved soil fertility compared to monoculture plantations.

Effects of burning harvested residues on the archaeal and bacterial communities of Eucalyptus urophylla substituting native vegetation

Lingyue Zhu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of burning or retaining harvested residues in Eucalyptus urophylla plantations on soil archaeal and bacterial communities, determining that available phosphorus, organic matter, and bulk density are key factors affecting microbial communities. Compared to soil with retained residues, soil with burned residues showed lower diversity in archaeal and bacterial communities.

Changes in soil carbon and nutrients and related extracellular enzymes in successive rotations of Japanese larch plantations

Hongxing Wang et al.

Summary: The conversion of extensive secondary forests into larch plantations in northeast China since the 1960s has altered understory vegetation and soil properties. Results show stable soil parameters, organic carbon, and nutrients after conversion, with a recommendation for rational thinning treatments at 16 years and a rotation age of larch plantations over 45 years to maintain soil sustainability.
