An Ensemble Method for Radicalization and Hate Speech Detection Online Empowered by Sentic Computing

Oscar Araque et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the automation of understanding human emotions from text through natural language processing and affective computing. Novel feature extraction methods using affective computing resources are proposed to improve classification performance. Thorough evaluation of proposed features across different datasets shows that combining affect-aware features with textual representations effectively improves performance.

Change Point Detection in Terrorism-Related Online Content Using Deep Learning Derived Indicators

Ourania Theodosiadou et al.

Summary: This study introduces a framework to detect significant change points in terrorism-related time series, indicating potentially important events. The framework involves classifying textual data and analyzing change points in the generated time series to estimate statistically significant changes in structural behavior at certain time locations. Evaluation of the framework using a dataset related to jihadist forums shows promise, with topic detection on the estimated change points further assessing its effectiveness.

Using graph embedding and machine learning to identify rebels on twitter

Muhammad Ali Masood et al.

Summary: Research has shown that extremists use social media for recruitment, fundraising, and propaganda, while limited research is available to identify rebel users. This study proposes a Supervised Rebel Identification (SRI) framework to identify rebels on Twitter by structuring users' tweets and extracting features for analysis. The results demonstrate that the SRI framework outperforms the baselines in accuracy.

Detecting White Supremacist Hate Speech Using Domain Specific Word Embedding With Deep Learning and BERT

Hind S. Alatawi et al.

Summary: White supremacist hate speech has become a harmful content on social media, with detrimental impacts on society, highlighting the need for automatic detection of such speech. This research explores the feasibility of detecting white supremacist hate speech on Twitter using deep learning and natural language processing techniques, utilizing BiLSTM and BERT models for this purpose. The BiLSTM model achieved a 0.75 F1-score, while BERT reached a higher 0.80 F1-score, both tested on a balanced dataset from Twitter and a Stormfront dataset.

Natural Language Understanding and Multimodal Discourse Analysis for Interpreting Extremist Communications and the Re-Use of These Materials Online

Peter Wignell et al.

Summary: This study aims to develop a multimodal analytical approach by applying natural language processing models to analyze articles from ISIS's online magazines to distinguish between propaganda for violent extremism and other types of articles. The results show that valuable insights can be gained from this approach and that integrating automated analysis with theoretical methods could improve the results.

Online Extremism Detection in Textual Content: A Systematic Literature Review

Saja Aldera et al.

Summary: Social media networks are increasingly being utilized by extremist groups to spread radical ideologies and recruit supporters, making it a top priority for counter-terrorist agencies, technology companies, and governments to identify extremist content and accounts. A systematic literature review of studies published between 2015 and 2020 revealed challenges, technical pitfalls, and opportunities for improving understanding and direction of online extremism. This critical analysis contributes to the growing field of research on online extremism.

Triggered by Defeat or Victory? Assessing the Impact of Presidential Election Results on Extreme Right-Wing Mobilization Online

Ryan Scrivens et al.

Summary: Theoretical literature in criminology, social movements, and political sociology provides different perspectives on how political outcomes could affect social movements. Some theories suggest that political defeats motivate the losing side to increase mobilization, while others claim that the winning side may increase mobilization. Research on the impact of Obama's and Trump's election victories in 2008 and 2016 on the largest white supremacy web-forum showed a significant increase in total posts and right-wing extremist posts, but no significant change in firearm posts. However, the volume of posts for all impact measures was highest during the 2008 election.
