Meta-Analysis of Adherence Promotion Interventions in Pediatric Asthma

Andrea Fidler et al.

Summary: This study aims to quantify the effectiveness of interventions to improve ICS adherence in pediatric asthma, explore differences in effect size estimates based on intervention and study characteristics, and characterize bias risk across interventions. Results showed that most interventions were effective, with some significant moderators, but had a high risk of bias. Additional longitudinal research is needed to assess intervention effectiveness over time.

Assessment of adherence to corticosteroids in asthma by drug monitoring or fractional exhaled nitric oxide: A literature review

Fahad Alahmadi et al.

Summary: Although corticosteroid treatment is effective in controlling asthma, poor adherence undermines its efficacy. Studies have used blood prednisolone levels and FeNO as markers for adherence to oral and inhaled corticosteroids, but further research is needed to assess the impact of dose and timing on blood levels and explore FeNO suppression testing in prospective studies.

Sensor-Based Electronic Monitoring for Asthma: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Summary: The study suggests that sensor-based inhaler monitoring with clinical feedback may improve asthma control and caregiver quality of life in diverse populations. However, higher healthcare utilization was observed among the intervention group participants, indicating the need for further refinement.

Medication Adherence in Patients With Severe Asthma Prescribed Oral Corticosteroids in the U-BIOPRED Cohort

Fahad H. Alahmadi et al.

Summary: Low adherence is a common issue in severe asthma patients, whether measured directly or self-reported. There is poor agreement between the two methods, suggesting a disassociation between self-assessment of medication adherence and actual oral corticosteroid use, indicating that each approach may provide complementary information in clinical practice.

Digital Health Technology in Asthma: A Comprehensive Scoping Review

Giselle Mosnaim et al.

Summary: Digital interventions can improve patient adherence to inhaled corticosteroids, with interactive interventions involving two-way patient communication showing improvement in both adherence and patients' impairment due to asthma. Digital interventions are generally positively perceived by patients and physicians, with implementation considered feasible.

Summary: The study found that patient self-monitoring through electronic medication monitoring and smartphone application, along with remote clinician feedback, can maintain high baseline ICS adherence and reduce SABA use.
