Original Effect of PAN-based and pitch-based carbon fibres on microstructure and properties of continuous Cf/ZrB2-SiC UHTCMCs

Summary: The microstructure and mechanical properties of two different Cf/ZrB2-SiC composites reinforced with continuous PyC coated PAN-derived fibers or uncoated pitch-derived fibers were compared. It was found that coated PAN-derived fibers provided higher strengths and damage tolerance due to a higher degree of fiber pull-out, but also resulted in a less homogeneous microstructure. On the other hand, the weaker fiber/matrix interface in coated bundles led to lower interlaminar shear, off-axis strength, and ablation resistance compared to uncoated pitch-derived fibers.

Multiphase composite Hf0.8Ti0.2B2-SiC-Si coating providing oxidation and ablation protection for graphite under different high temperature oxygen-containing environments

Summary: The novel multiphase composite coating composed of Hf0.8Ti0.2B2 solid solution, SiC and Si showed excellent oxidation and ablation resistance at high temperatures. The high viscosity oxide layer and dense structure of the coating improved high temperature stability, while the refractory oxide layer on the surface acted as an oxygen barrier to protect the graphite matrix from further consumption.

Improved ablation resistance of 3D-Cf/SiBCN composites with (PyC/SiC)3 multi-layers as interphase

Summary: The study found that 3D-Cf/SiBCN composites exhibit improved ablation resistance, with the amorphous SiBCN matrix oxidizing to form a borosilicate glass and SiC and Si3N4 grains precipitating and oxidizing to form a protective coating during ablation. The SiC layers in the (PyC/SiC)3 interphase effectively protect carbon fibers from ablation damage.

Effects of SiC on microstructure and properties of plasma sprayed ZrB2-ZrC composite coating

Effects of HfB2 addition on pressureless sintering behavior and microstructure of ZrB2-SiC composites

Summary: The study investigates the effects of HfB2 addition on the sintering behavior, densification, and microstructure of ZrB2-SiC in the presence of B4C and MoSi2 as a sintering catalyst. Results show that increasing HfB2 leads to higher density, with samples containing MoSi2 having the highest density. X-Ray diffraction revealed the formation of ZrB2HfB2 solid solution, and the addition of HfB2 improves microstructural properties.

Difference evaluation on ablation behaviors of ZrC-based and ZrB2-based UHTCs coatings

Summary: The study found that the ablation resistance of ZrB2-based coating was better than that of ZrC-based coating under the same environment, exhibiting lower surface temperature, thinner thickness of both the total oxide layer and the SiC-depleted layer. Ablation behavior of HfC coating with different thickness for carbon/carbon composites at ultra-high temperature

Summary: In this study, high-entropy ceramic matrix composites Cf/(Ti0.2Zr0.2Hf0.2Nb0.2Ta0.2)C-SiC showed excellent mechanical and ablation resistant properties. The composites were successfully fabricated with uniform phase and element distribution through precursor infiltration and pyrolysis. The combination of mechanical strength and ablation resistance makes Cf/(Ti0.2Zr0.2Hf0.2Nb0.2Ta0.2)C-SiC composites a new generation of ultra-high temperature materials.

High-entropy ceramics: Present status, challenges, and a look forward

Summary: High-entropy ceramics are solid solutions of inorganic compounds with diverse crystal and electronic structures, providing large space for property tuning through band structure and phonon engineering. In addition to traditional strengthening, hardening, and low thermal conductivity, HECs exhibit new properties such as colossal dielectric constant and super ionic conductivity. Challenges in processing, characterization, and property predictions are highlighted, along with future directions for material exploration and in-depth characterization.

High-entropy carbide ceramics with refined microstructure and enhanced thermal conductivity by the addition of graphite

Summary: The study comprehensively investigated the addition effect of graphite on high-entropy carbide (HEC) ceramics, showing that graphite added removed oxygen impurity, increased lattice parameter, improved densification behavior, refined HEC grains, and enhanced mechanical properties of the ceramics. Importantly, graphite addition significantly increased thermal conductivity due to the removal of oxide impurity, leading to improved thermal conductivity of the ceramics.
