Impact of local electricity markets and peer-to-peer trading on low-voltage grid operations

Marthe Fogstad Dynge et al.

Summary: This study analyzes a local electricity market in a real-life neighborhood of 52 households in Norway, finding that P2P trading has no significant impact on grid operation when only PVs are installed, but causes increased voltage fluctuations and 14% more losses when decentralized batteries are available. The local market brings overall savings for end-users and provides a framework for designing pricing schemes to support DSO operations.

Intelligent multi-zone residential HVAC control strategy based on deep reinforcement learning

Yan Du et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel deep reinforcement learning method, DDPG, is applied to optimize the HVAC control in residential buildings with the goal of minimizing energy consumption cost while maintaining user comfort. The simulation results demonstrate that the DDPG-based control strategy outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in reducing energy consumption cost and improving comfort level. Additionally, experiments with different building and price models show that the well-trained DDPG-based strategy has high generalization and adaptability for real-world applications.

Modeling competition of virtual power plants via deep learning

Markus Loschenbrand

Summary: Traditionally, the method of pooling flexible demand and generation units into Virtual Power Plants has computational complexity issue. This paper addresses this problem by approximating players' decisions using 'actor networks' and handling future uncertainties using 'critic networks', achieving tractability in multi-period optimization and market clearing. The proposed framework also suggests various possibilities of parallelization to increase computational efficiency and enable parallel solution of all time periods.

Distribution Network-Constrained Optimization of Peer-to-Peer Transactive Energy Trading Among Multi-Microgrids

Mingyu Yan et al.

Summary: This article introduces a two-level network-constrained peer-to-peer (P2P) transactive energy model for multi-microgrids, utilizing a MLMF Stackelberg game approach and distributed algorithms to ensure the effectiveness of the proposed solution. The DSO reconfigures the distribution network based on energy trading results and requests adjustments for network security, formulated in a MISOCP model for solution accuracy. Numerical results on various test systems demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed transactive model and its solution technique.

A Community-Based Energy Market Design Using Decentralized Decision-Making Under Uncertainty

Jose L. Crespo-Vazquez et al.

Summary: The shift to a user-centric approach is crucial for enhancing efficiency and sustainability of energy systems. The design of a community-based local energy market allows members to trade energy among each other under coordination of a Community Manager. This innovative approach involves every agent in determining the local market price and addressing scheduling challenges under uncertainty.

Co-simulation of transactive energy markets: A framework for market testing and evaluation

Dylan Cutler et al.

Summary: The rapid growth of distributed energy resources (DER) and the intelligent control of these assets are reshaping the electrical distribution system. Establishing distribution-level electricity markets where devices/aggregations can participate in price formation is a possible approach. A co-simulation platform, such as HELICS, can be used to model distribution-level markets and evaluate market and DER performance, bidding approaches, and power quality. This approach shows the potential for transactive markets to increase value for customers compared to current remuneration methods.

Optimal Model for Local Energy Community Scheduling Considering Peer to Peer Electricity Transactions

Ricardo Faia et al.

Summary: The current energy strategy of the European Union focuses on making end-users key participants in electricity markets through the establishment of energy communities. These communities, mainly made up of prosumers with small-scale energy production equipment like rooftop photovoltaic panels, are encouraged to use local electricity markets to increase the penetration of renewable energy and reduce overall energy costs. By allowing for active participation in the markets, especially when using energy communities, significant energy savings can be achieved through the combination of peer-to-peer transactions and energy storage systems.
