Risk of depression in multiple sclerosis across disease-modifying therapies

Elisa Longinetti et al.

Summary: The study suggests that the choice of disease-modifying therapy may affect the risk of depression in multiple sclerosis patients, but the impact of depression and antidepressant use on DMT discontinuation and MS relapse is limited.

Fatigue self-management education in persons with disease-related fatigue: A comprehensive review of the effectiveness on fatigue and quality of life

Ruth Hersche et al.

Summary: This study systematically reviewed the effectiveness of fatigue self-management education (SME) on fatigue and quality of life (QoL) in individuals with disease-related fatigue. The results showed that 46% of the studies reported statistically significant improvements in fatigue and QoL. The evidence suggests a positive effect of SME in persons with cancer and multiple sclerosis. However, the overall evidence on the effectiveness of SMEs on fatigue and QoL is limited and inconsistent.

Fatigue, depression, and pain in multiple sclerosis: How neuroinflammation translates into dysfunctional reward processing and anhedonic symptoms

Henrik Heitmann et al.

Summary: Fatigue, depression, and pain are common symptoms in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients, with recent neuroimaging and neuroimmunological findings suggesting that dysfunctional reward processing may represent a shared mechanism for these symptoms. Therapeutic focus on monoaminergic neurotransmission is key, but current treatments have limitations in addressing these symptoms effectively.

Summary: The study compared the efficacy of amantadine, modafinil, and methylphenidate in alleviating fatigue in multiple sclerosis patients. Results showed that none of the medications were superior to placebo in improving fatigue and had more frequent adverse events.

Quality of life in multiple sclerosis: The differential impact of motor and cognitive fatigue

Sabina David Ruban et al.

Summary: The study found that in patients with multiple sclerosis, cognitive fatigue and motor fatigue impact different aspects of quality of life independently from bodily disability. Cognitive fatigue is mainly correlated with mental health aspects of quality of life, while motor fatigue is mainly correlated with physical health aspects.
