An atlas on risk factors for multiple sclerosis: a Mendelian randomization study

Shuai Yuan et al.

Summary: The study found that childhood and adulthood body mass index were positively associated with MS, while physical activity and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D were inversely associated with MS. Additionally, possible associations were found for type 2 diabetes, waist circumference, body fat percentage, age of puberty, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol in relation to MS. Data from systematic review suggested that exposure to organic solvents, Epstein Barr virus and cytomegalovirus infection, and diphtheria and tetanus vaccination were also associated with MS risk.

An appraisal of antigen identification and IgG effector functions driving host immune responses in multiple sclerosis

Xiaoli Yu et al.

Summary: Increased immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies and oligoclonal bands (OCB) are characteristic features of multiple sclerosis (MS) and are associated with disease activity and brain atrophy. Despite intensive research, the antigen specificities of IgG in MS remain unclear, suggesting that intrathecal IgG is not driven by antigen-stimulation. Co-deposition of IgG and activated complement products in MS lesions indicates a potential critical role of IgG effector functions in disease pathogenesis.

Association of Infectious Mononucleosis in Childhood and Adolescence With Risk for a Subsequent Multiple Sclerosis Diagnosis Among Siblings

Summary: The study suggests that having infectious mononucleosis in childhood and especially adolescence is a risk factor associated with a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis, independent of shared familial factors.

Skin exposure to UVB light induces a skin-brain-gonad axis and sexual behavior

Roma Parikh et al.

Summary: UVB exposure affects sex hormone levels and sexual behavior through skin mediation, resulting in increased hormone levels, enhanced sexual behavior, and anti-Mullerian hormone expression, as well as heightened romantic passion and aggressiveness in humans. It suggests potential opportunities for treating sex-steroid-related dysfunctions.

Inflammation in multiple sclerosis

Stefanie Haase et al.

Summary: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system (CNS). Its underlying pathomechanisms involve autoimmune responses towards CNS self-antigens, including autoreactive T cells, B cells, and myeloid cells. Current therapies aim to shift the immune cell repertoire from pro-inflammatory to anti-inflammatory, involving regulatory T and B cells, and anti-inflammatory macrophages.
