Altered Dynamic Functional Connectivity in Patients With Mitochondrial Encephalomyopathy With Lactic Acidosis and Stroke-Like Episodes (MELAS) at Acute and Chronic Stages: Shared and Specific Brain Connectivity Abnormalities

Rong Wang et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the abnormalities of dynamic functional connectivity in patients with MELAS at acute and chronic stages, and to determine the relationship between dynamic connectivity alterations and volumes of stroke-like lesions. The findings suggest both similar and distinct dFC alterations in MELAS patients at different stages, providing novel insights into the neuropathological mechanisms of the disease.

Linear cortical cystic lesions: Characteristic MR findings in MELAS patients

Hidetoshi Ishigaki et al.

Summary: In this study, linear cystic lesions and laminar necrosis were evaluated as cortical MRI findings in mitochondrial disease patients. The results showed that 29.6% of patients had cortical cystic lesions, with MELAS being the most common subtype. Laminar necrosis was only detected in 4.2% of patients.

Major cerebral vessels involvement in patients with MELAS syndrome: Worth a scan? A systematic review

Laura Ludovica Gramegna et al.

Summary: The majority of MELAS patients exhibit alterations in major vessel caliber, with 37% experiencing dilation during stroke-like episodes, and 24% having issues with stenosis. Identification of intracranial vessels dilation or stenosis during a stroke-like episode could be useful for selecting new treatment protocols. Recognition of major cerebral vessels dissections and degenerative changes outside of stroke-like episodes may assist in preventing subsequent complications.
