Effect of probiotics on gingival inflammation and oral microbiota: A meta-analysis

Jiaxuan Liu et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effects of probiotics on patients with plaque-induced gingivitis, and found that oral probiotics did not show significant improvement in gingival inflammation and oral microecological environment in these patients.

Nutrition as a Key Modifiable Factor for Periodontitis and Main Chronic Diseases

Prescilla Martinon et al.

Summary: Nutrition plays a crucial role in preventing chronic diseases, including periodontal disease. High intake of sugar, saturated fat, low fiber, among other nutrients, increases the risk of periodontal diseases, while a diet low in sugar and high in fiber helps reduce this risk.

Hydrodynamics and surface properties influence biofilm proliferation

Milos Krsmanovic et al.

Summary: A biofilm is a colloidal dispersion of bacterial cells and excreted polymers that provides protection for microorganisms and can successfully colonize surfaces. Hydrodynamics and stratum properties play important roles in guiding bacteria rejection and removal. Cell motion and surface properties influence the formation and detachment of biofilms.

The dental plaque biofilm matrix

Nicholas S. Jakubovics et al.

Summary: The extracellular matrix of microbial biofilms, such as dental plaque, plays a critical role in maintaining cell spatial arrangement and coordinating cellular functions, impacting the development of dental diseases. Strategies targeting the matrix are crucial for oral health maintenance, with the complex composition of subgingival dental plaque matrix still not fully understood.

Maintaining homeostatic control of periodontal epithelial tissue

Ana M. Chang et al.

Summary: The coordination between oral commensal bacteria and the host innate immune response is crucial for maintaining oral homeostasis. Commensal bacteria are speculated to play a host protective role in maintaining health, although little is known about their specific contributions to oral health.

Polymicrobial communities in periodontal disease: Their quasi-organismal nature and dialogue with the host

George Hajishengallis et al.

Summary: In health, indigenous polymicrobial communities at mucosal surfaces maintain an ecological balance via interactions that promote their own and the host's fitness. However, destabilizing factors may disrupt this balance, leading to dysbiosis and periodontitis. Dysbiotic community is a quasi-organismal entity with constituent organisms communicating and displaying functional specialization.

Connection between Periodontitis-Induced Low-Grade Endotoxemia and Systemic Diseases: Neutrophils as Protagonists and Targets

Ljubomir Vitkov et al.

Summary: Periodontitis can lead to systemic low-grade inflammation by altering the response of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells, increasing the risk of developing systemic diseases. Inhibiting the excessive response of neutrophils in periodontitis may help reduce or prevent the occurrence of systemic diseases.

The evolution and changing ecology of the African hominid oral microbiome

James A. Fellows Yates et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the core microbiome of the human oral cavity has been maintained throughout African hominid evolution and is shared with howler monkeys, indicating their importance since around 40 million years ago. Neanderthals and modern humans show highly similar oral microbial profiles, sharing functional adaptations and genetic diversity not observed in later human populations. This sheds light on human evolution, the ancestral state of the human microbiome, and provides insights into microbial health and disease over time.

A Model for Dental Age Verification Using Ultrastructural Imaging for Modern and Fossil Representatives of the Rhinocerotidae Family

Summary: Determining the age of an animal based on remains, especially fossil remains, is challenging. The study attempted to establish a relationship between the age of a rhinoceros and the ultrastructure of its tooth. The results showed that counting growth lines in the dentine of the tooth accurately corresponded to the known age of the animal.

Human oral mucosa cell atlas reveals a stromal-neutrophil axis regulating tissue immunity

Drake Winslow Williams et al.

Summary: The oral mucosa is an understudied barrier tissue rich in antigens and commensals, susceptible to periodontitis. By compiling a single-cell transcriptome atlas, researchers identified inflammatory epithelial and stromal cell populations promoting antimicrobial defenses and neutrophil recruitment. Exaggerated stromal cell responsiveness was found to enhance neutrophil and leukocyte infiltration in periodontitis, highlighting the role of tissue stroma in regulating mucosal tissue homeostasis and disease pathogenesis.

Porphyromonas gingivalis Provokes Exosome Secretion and Paracrine Immune Senescence in Bystander Dendritic Cells

Ranya Elsayed et al.

Summary: The study suggests that P. gingivalis induces early cell senescence in dendritic cells (DCs) by direct cellular invasion and greatly amplifies senescence in bystander DCs by secreting inflammatory exosomes.
