Side-chain fluorotelomer-based polymers in children car seats

Yan Wu et al.

Summary: In 2018, popular children car seats in the United States were tested for fluorine content and PFAS. Results showed that PFAS were detected in 97% of the samples with total concentrations up to 268 ng/g, and fabric samples generally had higher levels than foam and laminated composites. Furthermore, the presence of side-chain fluorotelomer-based polymers and fluorotelomer (meth)acrylates indicated the potential degradation into PFAAs under UV light, highlighting a possible dermal route of exposure.

PFAS Exposure Pathways for Humans and Wildlife: A Synthesis of Current Knowledge and Key Gaps in Understanding

Amila O. De Silva et al.

Summary: The understanding of human and wildlife exposures to PFAS has mainly focused on a few traditional substances, but there is a need for assessment of a wider range of new PFAS. Diet is a major pathway of human exposure to some PFAS, but there is significant variability across populations and compounds. Total fluorine data and information on unidentified organofluorine are essential, and water has been identified as a major exposure source in contaminated communities. As water sources are remediated, other sources of exposure such as dust, personal care products, and indoor environments may become more significant.

Reconstructing the Composition of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances in Contemporary Aqueous Film-Forming Foams

Bridger J. Ruyle et al.

Summary: Research shows that most of the extractable organofluorine (EOF) in contemporary and legacy AFFF consists of targeted compounds and oxidizable precursors, with 90% being 6:2 fluorotelomers in contemporary products. The novel method developed can accurately determine the total PFAS mass attributable to AFFF in any aqueous sample, differentiate gross precursor classes, and identify major precursor species.
