A cost-effective approach to mitigate conflict between ranchers and large predators: A case study with jaguars in the Mayan Forest

J. Antonio de la Torre et al.

Summary: The study in Mexico's Mayan Forest found that improving husbandry practices, such as using electric fences and night enclosures, significantly reduced predation rates by jaguars on livestock, increased productivity, and the cost of implementing protection infrastructure was financially offset. The results suggest that conflicts between local communities and large carnivores can be mitigated through capacity building of ranchers, leading to win-win situations for both jaguars and the local communities.

The journey to monitoring ecosystem services: Are we there yet?

Ana Sofia Vaz et al.

Summary: This passage discusses three key challenges in ecosystem services monitoring: integrating data across scales, identifying operational metrics considering interactions between people and ecosystems, and integrating sociocultural values and knowledge. It aims to stimulate the ES research community to tackle these focus areas.
