Informality and water justice: community perspectives on water issues in Cape Town's low-income neighbourhoods

Johan Enqvist et al.

Summary: Cape Town's water injustices are further exacerbated by the mismatch between government interventions and the realities faced by informal settlements and low-income areas. This interdisciplinary study draws on narratives from over 300 communities, highlighting the overwhelming frustration regarding the municipality's shortcomings in addressing issues such as leaking pipes, faulty bills, and inadequate sanitation. The interventions in Cape Town tend to rely on technical solutions that overlook or worsen the complex social problems on the ground. Achieving water justice requires a focus on the various everyday realities experienced across formal and informal settlements.

Drought Cycle Analysis to Evaluate the Influence of a Dense Network of Small Reservoirs on Drought Evolution

G. G. Ribeiro Neto et al.

Summary: This study used a novel Drought Cycle Analysis method to show that unmonitored small reservoirs can significantly impact and prolong drought events, specifically extending the duration of hydrological drought. The research also highlights the importance of including small reservoirs in water resource management strategies for drought-prone regions.

The benefits and negative impacts of citizen science applications to water as experienced by participants and communities

David W. Walker et al.

Summary: Citizen science is becoming more prevalent in water sciences, with benefits for both participants and wider communities. It is important to consider the interrelationship of benefits and community capitals in order to foster the realization of citizen science water projects. Additionally, negative impacts should not be overlooked, especially in low-income regions, when implementing citizen science initiatives.

The legacy of large dams in the United States

Giuliano Di Baldassarre et al.

Summary: This paper examines the influence of large dams on population growth and agricultural expansion in the United States, finding that dam development leads to a cycle of increasing water consumption. Particularly in the Southwest region, the legacy of dams results in high levels of water consumption and severe water crises.

A Shorter, Sharper Rainy Season Amplifies California Wildfire Risk

Daniel L. Swain

Summary: California has seen increasingly severe autumn wildfires in recent decades, with a clear link to climate change. Recent research shows that the delay in autumn precipitation and increased sharpness of precipitation seasonality in California have important implications for ecology and wildfire risk. These observations align with climate model projections, suggesting that recent trends could be a preview of larger changes to come.

Summary: This study proposes an interdisciplinary approach that combines sociohydrological insights with analyses of social power and interactions with water systems. By examining empirical evidence from Cape Town, the study highlights the importance of social power and inequalities in shaping uneven experiences of water insecurity.

Effect of a reservoir network on drought propagation in a semi-arid catchment in Brazil

Simone C. H. van Langen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of a network of reservoirs on drought propagation, finding that the onset of reservoir drought (RD) occurs later than meteorological drought (MD) with an even longer delay between their peaks. Streamflow drought initially lags behind MD but transforms into a similar RD. RD is initially more severe downstream.
