Evolutionarily recent dual obligatory symbiosis among adelgids indicates a transition between fungus- and insect-associated lifestyles

Gitta Szabo et al.

Summary: Adelgids harbor diverse symbionts, with Vallotia and Profftia being complementary young endosymbionts that originated from Rhizopus fungi. The transition from fungus to insect endosymbionts resulted in loss of various functions, expanding our understanding of evolutionary trajectories of host-associated microbes.

Diversity of bacteria associated with Hormaphidinae aphids (Hemiptera: Aphididae)

Ting-Ting Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the bacterial flora in hormaphidine aphids using high-throughput sequencing and found that the primary endosymbiont Buchnera aphidicola is the most abundant symbiont. Six secondary symbionts were detected in Hormaphidinae, with widespread distribution of Arsenophonus. The composition of symbionts does not seem to be related to aphid tribes, host plants, or geographical distributions, indicating possible horizontal transfers of these symbionts in Hormaphidinae.

Chromosome-Scale Genome Assemblies of Aphids Reveal Extensively Rearranged Autosomes and Long-Term Conservation of the X Chromosome

Thomas C. Mathers et al.

Summary: Chromosome rearrangements in aphids have led to a significant reorganization over the past 30 million years, resulting in the inability to determine chromosome homology between Aphidini and Macrosiphini tribes. Despite rapid sequence evolution, low gene expression, and high transposable element load, gene content of the aphid sex (X) chromosome remained unchanged. Blood-feeding hemipterans, despite being more diverged, have conserved synteny, suggesting that rapid evolution of genome structure may be a unique characteristic of aphids.

A chromosome-level genome assembly of the woolly apple aphid,Eriosoma lanigerumHausmann (Hemiptera: Aphididae)

Roberto Biello et al.

Summary: The woolly apple aphid is a major pest of apple trees and the generation of its chromosome-level genome assembly provides a valuable resource for research in various areas such as insect-plant interactions and pest resistance management. The phylogenomic analysis reveals the evolutionary relationships of woolly apple aphid with other aphid species, highlighting its importance in the aphid subfamily Eriosomatinae.

Summary: The evolutionary rate correlations between hosts and long-term symbionts may be a widespread phenomenon, as indicated by the highly significant correlation of molecular rates between the genomes of Buchnera and the mitochondrial genomes of their hosts.
