Efficient production of nutraceuticals and lactic acid from lignocellulosic biomass by combining organosolv fractionation with enzymatic/ fermentative routes

Anthi Karnaouri et al.

Summary: The use of isobutanol as an organic solvent in the OxiOrganosolv process can efficiently delignify and fractionate beechwood, producing cellulose-rich solid pulp and serving as a carbon source for microbial fermentation. Additionally, the recovery of C5 sugars in the aqueous liquid fractions includes a fraction rich in xylo-oligosaccharides with prebiotic potential.

Metabolic engineering of 1,2-propanediol production from cellobiose using beta-glucosidase-expressing E. coli

Daisuke Nonaka et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated an enhanced production efficiency of 1,2-propanediol using metabolically engineered Escherichia coli, with successful synthesis from glucose and cellobiose. Improved production was achieved by deleting competing pathways and inactivating the PTS system to reduce carbon flux towards downstream glycolysis.
