Ultra-compact dwarfs beyond the centre of the Fornax galaxy cluster: hints of UCD formation in low-density environments

Summary: Through deep optical images and public near-infrared data, the study revisited the UCD population in the Fornax cluster and systematically searched for UCD candidates for the first time out to the virial radius of the galaxy cluster. The addition of newly identified UCD candidates, combined with spectroscopically confirmed UCDs, significantly increased the number of known Fornax UCDs, challenging current models of UCD formation. The distribution of UCDs within the Fornax cluster suggests that a population of UCDs may form in low-density environments.
