Experimental Study of Transient Flow Regimes in a Model Hydroturbine Draft Tube

Summary: The swirling flow with the formation of a precessing vortex core (PVC) in the draft tube model of a hydroturbine was studied experimentally under transient operating conditions. The PVC lifetime in the transient regime was found to correlate with the transient time, and the velocity profiles and pressure pulsations were shown to change quasi-statically between different operating conditions. Phase-averaged velocity distributions in transient regimes indicate that a transient regime consists of a sequence of quasi-steady regimes.
