Role of Plasticizers on PHB/bio-TPE Blends Compatibilized by Reactive Extrusion

Kerly Samaniego et al.

Summary: Poly(hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) is a potential green alternative to commonly used plastics, which is biologically synthesized and biodegradable. However, it has limitations in thermo-mechanical performance. In this study, blends of PHB with a biodegradable thermoplastic elastomer (bio-TPE) were prepared and evaluated. The results showed that the interaction between plasticizers and reactive agents altered the performance of the blends.

Production of biodegradable sodium caseinate film containing titanium oxide nanoparticles and grape seed essence and investigation of physicochemical properties

Roghiye Ashrafi Yorghanlu et al.

Summary: In this study, sodium caseinate films were modified with titanium oxide nanoparticles and grape seed essence to enhance their properties. The addition of nanoparticles improved mechanical properties, while grape seed essence enhanced antioxidant effects and reduced water vapor permeability. The results showed positive effects of these additives on the physical and chemical properties of sodium caseinate films.

Summary: This study focuses on enhancing the performance of green composites based on biopolymers and lignocellulosic fillers derived from food waste by using reactive compatibilizers. The addition of reactive compatibilizer PBS-g-MAH improved the interfacial adhesion between the polymer matrix and filler, resulting in significant increases in mechanical and thermomechanical properties. The improved dispersion of fillers and the nucleating effect of fillers on the polymer crystallinity played a key role in enhancing the overall performance of the green composites.

Biodegradable nano composite film based on modified starch-albumin/MgO; antibacterial, antioxidant and structural properties

Seydeh Negar Hosseini et al.

Summary: An antibacterial/antioxidant film based on modified starch and albumin containing magnesium oxide nanoparticles was synthesized. The addition of MgO nanoparticles increased film thickness, reduced moisture content, water solubility, and water vapor permeability, while enhancing antioxidant activity. Films with MgO nanoparticles showed rougher and more heterogeneous surface morphology compared to films without nanoparticles, confirming the presence of MgO in the polymer matrix. Additionally, the films exhibited antimicrobial properties against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus.

Preparation of different morphologies cellulose nanocrystals from waste cotton fibers and its effect on PLLA/PDLA composites films

Xing Cao et al.

Summary: This study explicitly demonstrates the influence of nanocellulose with different aspect ratios on the performance of PLLA/PDLA, acting as a nucleating agent to promote crystallization and assist in forming stereocomplex crystallites. ACNS and ACNC have significant effects on crystallinity and oxygen barrier performance, while ACNF has the greatest impact on tensile properties, with minimal effects on transparency and haze of films. These findings have important implications for the preparation of PLA composite materials for various applications.

Conducting/biodegradable chitosan-polyaniline film; Antioxidant, color, solubility and water vapor permeability properties

Sajad Pirsa et al.

Summary: In this study, a chitosan-polyaniline nanocomposite film was prepared, and it was found that increasing polyaniline concentration and synthesis time reduced water solubility and water vapor permeability, while also altering the surface color of the film and enhancing antioxidant properties. Additionally, polyaniline decreased light transmission and transparency of the films, making them suitable for packaging light-sensitive products.
