Role of unsaturated soil properties in the development of slope susceptibility map

Alfrendo Satyanaga et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to develop slope susceptibility maps for Jurong Formation residual soils in Singapore with the incorporation of unsaturated soil parameters. The results showed that the slope susceptibility map developed using this method was more conservative compared to the results from 2D analyses.

Flood Suspended Sediment Transport: Combined Modelling from Dilute to Hyper-Concentrated Flow

Jaan H. Pu et al.

Summary: This paper examines the sediment transport during flooding, proposing a linear-power coupled model to integrate considerations for hyper-concentrated and dilute flows. A parameterised method is used for modelling, accurately computing concentration profiles for different suspended sediment conditions. The proposed model shows good correspondence with measured data and other modeling results for dilute and hyper-concentrated profiles.

Characteristics of unsaturated soil slope covered with capillary barrier system and deep-rooted grass under different rainfall patterns

Yangyang Li et al.

Summary: Rainfall-induced slope failures in residual soil slopes can be prevented by using slope covers like the capillary barrier system and vegetative cover. The capillary barrier system limits rainwater infiltration, while vegetation increases soil strength. Numerical analyses and field measurements show that the capillary barrier system plays a more significant role than Vetiver grass in maintaining slope stability, especially under delayed and normal rainfall patterns.

A new framework to determine general multimodal soil water characteristic curves

Wei Yan et al.

Summary: A discrete-continuous multimodal van Genuchten model for soil water characteristic curve (SWCC) is developed with a convenient parameter calibration method to describe the relationship between soil suction and water content in soils with complex pore structures. The proposed model allows for any positive integer modality number N, and a unique set of parameters is determined combining curve fitting and graphical analysis based on SWCC shape features. A modality number reduction method is introduced to simplify the SWCC function by minimizing parameters, and the model is validated using bimodal and trimodal SWCC measurements from various soils, showing strong consistency between fitted curves and measured data.

Effect of Unimodal and Bimodal Soil Hydraulic Properties on Slope Stability Analysis

Hsin-Fu Yeh et al.

Summary: Rainfall infiltration is the primary trigger of slope instability, affecting water content and internal stress of soil. The soil water retention curve (SWRC) describes moisture characteristics, with bimodal models showing better water retention capacity. Seepage analysis reveals bimodal models lead to deeper potential failure depths due to superior water storage performance.

Three-dimensional slope stability analysis incorporating unsaturated soil properties in Singapore

Sabrina C. Y. Ip et al.

Summary: Rainfall-induced slope failures often occur in residual soils during or after torrential rainfall, and in Singapore, these soils are generally unsaturated due to the deep groundwater table. This study utilized ordinary kriging to estimate spatial distributions of saturated and unsaturated soil properties, and conducted seepage analysis using TRIGRS to assess three-dimensional slope stability. The majority of the investigated zone exhibited high factors of safety, with only a small percentage associated with very low factors of safety.
