Sex steroids and steroidogenesis-related genes in the sea cucumber, Holothuria scabra and their potential role in gonad maturation

Tipsuda Thongbuakaew et al.

Summary: The sea cucumber Holothuria scabra is an economically valuable marine species distributed throughout the Asia-Pacific region. This study confirmed the presence of sex steroids such as estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone in H. scabra neural and gonadal tissues, as well as identified key genes associated with the steroidogenic pathway. Gene expression analyses suggested that these steroids may play a role in the reproduction of H. scabra.

Effects of Benzo[a]pyrene, Cortisol, and 17ss-Estradiol on Liver Microsomal EROD Activity of Anguilla anguilla: An In Vitro Approach

C. S. S. Ferreira et al.

Summary: The study aimed to assess the effects of environmentally relevant concentrations of benzo[a]pyrene and two steroid hormones on fish liver microsomal EROD activity. It found that benzo[a]pyrene inhibited EROD activity in a dose-dependent manner, while cortisol significantly induced the activity of this enzyme. Steroid hormones were able to counteract the inhibitory effects of benzo[a]pyrene on EROD activity, showing a protective effect on enzyme activity.

Effect of Chronic Exposure to Pesticide Methomyl on Antioxidant Defense System in Testis of Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and Its Recovery Pattern

Shunlong Meng et al.

Summary: The study found that lower concentrations of methomyl had no effect on antioxidant levels in the testis of Nile tilapia, while higher concentrations significantly influenced these antioxidants. Recovery tests showed that oxidative damage caused by lower concentrations of methomyl was reversible, whereas damage from higher concentrations was irreversible within 18 days.

Investigation on Sex Hormone-Disruption Effects of Two Novel Brominated Flame Retardants (DBDPE and BTBPE) in Male Zebrafish (Danio rerio) and Two Human Cell Lines (H295R and MVLN)

Jiwon Choi et al.

Summary: The study suggests that DBDPE and BTBPE may disrupt sex hormone regulation in male zebrafish and H295R cells, but likely not through alteration of the steroidogenesis pathway.
