Visualization of the flat electronic band in twisted bilayer graphene near the magic angle twist

M. Iqbal Bakti Utama et al.

Summary: The study reveals that bilayer graphene can form a flat moire miniband at specific twisted angles, which is essential for the emergence of ordered phases. Through high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, the visualization of this flat moire miniband in twisted bilayer graphene has been successfully achieved.

Excitons in a reconstructed moire potential in twisted WSe2/WSe2 homobilayers

Trond Andersen et al.

Summary: Recent advancements have allowed for direct imaging of stacking domains in van der Waals heterostructures, enabling a better understanding of the correlation between moire structures and electronic/optical properties. Through this technique, researchers were able to investigate reconstructed moire patterns in twisted WSe2/WSe2 bilayers and identify the emergence of distinct exciton species in photoluminescence measurements, with the ability to tune these states individually through electrostatic gating.

Imaging moire flat bands in three-dimensional reconstructed WSe2/WS2 superlattices

Hongyuan Li et al.

Summary: Scanning tunnelling spectroscopy and ab initio simulations have revealed a strong 3D buckling reconstruction and large in-plane strain redistribution in WSe2/WS2 moire heterostructures, leading to remarkably narrow and highly localized K-point moire flat bands. These findings contradicted previous simplified theoretical models but were in quantitative agreement with ab initio simulations capturing the full 3D structural reconstruction, highlighting the dominance of strain redistribution and 3D buckling in determining the effective moire potential in TMD heterostructures.

Chern insulators, van Hove singularities and topological flat bands in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene

Shuang Wu et al.

Summary: In magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene, doping-induced Lifshitz transitions and van Hove singularities lead to the emergence of correlation-induced gaps and topologically non-trivial subbands. With the presence of a magnetic field, quantized Hall plateaus reveal the subband topology and signal the emergence of Chern insulators with Chern numbers. Additionally, a van Hove singularity at a filling of 3.5 suggests the possibility of a fractional Chern insulator, accompanied by a crossover from low-temperature metallic to high-temperature insulating behavior.

Anisotropic band flattening in graphene with one-dimensional superlattices

Yutao Li et al.

Summary: By utilizing dielectric patterning to subject graphene to a one-dimensional electrostatic superlattice, multiple Dirac cones are observed, demonstrating the ability to induce tunable anisotropy in high-mobility two-dimensional materials. This offers a new approach to engineering flat energy bands where electron interactions can lead to emergent properties, which is desired for novel electronic and optical applications.

Highly tunable junctions and non-local Josephson effect in magic-angle graphene tunnelling devices

Daniel Rodan-Legrain et al.

Summary: Magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene is a highly tunable two-dimensional material platform exhibiting a wide range of phases, such as metal, insulator and superconductor states. Local electrostatic gating devices enable versatile quantum devices like Josephson junctions, edge tunnelling spectroscopy, and single-electron transistor operation. By engineering Josephson junctions and tunnelling transistors solely defined by electrostatic gates, these devices show non-local electrodynamics in a magnetic field, paving the way for graphene-based tunable superconducting qubits and other applications.

Complete structural characterization of single carbon nanotubes by Rayleigh scattering circular dichroism

Fengrui Yao et al.

Summary: Non-invasive, high-throughput spectroscopic techniques can identify the chiral indices of carbon nanotubes down to the single-tube level. However, optical methods have failed to accurately characterize the handedness of single nanotubes due to weak chiroptical signals. By using Rayleigh scattering circular dichroism, the complete structure identification of single nanotubes in terms of both chiral indices and handedness has been successfully demonstrated. This method enhances the nanotube's chiroptical signal significantly, enabling exploration of handedness-related functionality of single nanotubes.

One-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures: Growth mechanism and handedness correlation revealed by nondestructive TEM

Yongjia Zheng et al.

Summary: This work focuses on synthesizing one-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures, where different atomic layers encase a single-walled carbon nanotube to form a crystalized structure. The unconventional growth process requires nucleation on a curved surface and shell-by-shell extension, sparking interest in understanding the formation mechanism. Through comprehensive studies using TEM, edge structures and crystal relationships are identified, revealing the importance of surface cleanliness and isolation for perfect 1D heterostructure formation. The correlation between the SWCNT template and BNNT crystals is also elucidated, providing insights into crystal growth on highly curved atomic substrates.
