Charrs of the genus Salvelinus (Salmonidae): hybridization, phylogeny and evolution

Alexander G. Osinov et al.

Summary: The evolutionary history, systematics, and taxonomy of charrs of the genus Salvelinus, particularly the S. alpinus-S. malma species complex, remain confused due to ecological and morphological flexibility of the group and historical hybridization. Analysis of phylogenetic relationships and introgressive hybridization between species revealed complexities due to incomplete lineage sorting and hybridization, suggesting the important role of introgressive hybridization in the evolutionary history of charrs and the appearance of high diversity in morphology, ecology, and taxonomy.

Functional genetic diversity in an exploited marine species and its relevance to fisheries management

Eleni L. Petrou et al.

Summary: The timing of reproduction has a significant impact on population structure in Pacific herring, with gene flow being geographically limited during specific spawning seasons. Genetic diversity, chromosomal rearrangements, and the influence of specific genes like SYNE2 on spawn timing were also highlighted in this study, emphasizing the importance of considering seasonal and spatial variation in herring management for conservation purposes.

Population Genetic Structure of Pacific Herring Clupea pallasii in the Northwestern Pacific Ocean Based on Microsatellite Analysis

D. S. Kurnosov et al.

Summary: The population genetic structure of Pacific herring Clupea pallasii in the northwestern Pacific Ocean was studied using 11 microsatellite loci, revealing significant genetic differences between lacustrine and marine forms as well as the presence of separate populations in lakes Ainskoe and Vilyui. Marine form samples were divided into two geographical groups and further into five population groups, indicating a dynamic population structure that can change over time and environmental conditions.

Genomic evidence supports the introgression between two sympatric stickleback species inhabiting the White Sea basin

Artem Nedoluzhko et al.

Summary: Interspecies hybridization involving distant fish species was documented in this study, highlighting unique transposable element amplification types and introgression-linked markers in the genome. The potential of introgression in providing specific variants and linking sequence blocks with functional mutations was revealed, while the need for more samples displaying introgression to further confirm the conclusions was emphasized.
