The Neurological Predictor Scale Predicts Adaptive Functioning via Executive Dysfunction in Young Adult Survivors of Childhood Brain Tumor

Rella J. Kautiainen et al.

Summary: The study found that the complexity of childhood brain tumor treatments and sequelae was associated with poorer long-term adaptive functioning, mainly mediated by executive dysfunction. Cognitive rehabilitation programs may focus on executive function and initiation to help survivors achieve comparable levels of independence in everyday function.

Cerebellar-Subcortical-Cortical Systems as Modulators of Cognitive Functions

Sarah V. Clark et al.

Summary: Research over the past few decades has established that the cerebellum plays a role in executive functions, but the exact nature of this role remains unclear. There are multiple theories of cerebellar function and diverse cognitive processes encompassed within executive function, leading to challenges in investigating the cerebellum's involvement. Evidence suggests that the posterior cerebellum is involved in working memory, planning, inhibition, and flexibility, but further research is needed to conclusively determine the specific functions of the cerebellum in executive functioning.

White matter hyperintensity volumes are related to processing speed in long-term survivors of childhood cerebellar tumors

Holly A. Aleksonis et al.

Summary: High white matter hyperintensity (WMH) burden is consistently associated with decreases in cognitive performance, especially processing speed, in several clinical populations. This study found that survivors of childhood cerebellar tumor, especially those treated with chemoradiation therapy, showed higher total WMH volumes and slower processing speed. Multivariate brain-behavior relationships revealed that periventricular WMHs were significantly associated with slower processing speed performance.

Greater white matter hyperintensities and the association with executive function in suicide attempters with late-life depression

Chemin Lin et al.

Summary: This study found that suicide attempters with late-life depression had significantly higher global and periventricular WMH, which may result in lower executive function and contribute to cognitive decline in older adults with suicidality.
