Skin damage induced by zinc oxide nanoparticles combined with UVB is mediated by activating cell pyroptosis via the NLRP3 inflammasome-autophagy-exosomal pathway

Yu-Ying Chen et al.

Summary: Our study found that co-exposure to UVB and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) leads to activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome and pyroptosis in keratinocytes. Additionally, the exposure to both UVB and ZnONPs disrupts cellular autophagy and increases cell exosome release. In vivo, UVB and ZnONPs exposure causes skin toxicity, as indicated by histological injury, increased skin thickness, and transepidermal water loss. Notably, the NLRP3 inflammasome-mediated pyroptosis is also activated during exposure. Topical application of pterostilbene (PT) attenuates NLRP3 inflammasome activation and pyroptosis by reducing ROS generation and mitochondrial ROS (mtROS) levels.

Use of an in silico knowledge discovery approach to determine mechanistic studies of silver nanoparticles-induced toxicity from in vitro to in vivo

Summary: This study reveals that the toxicity of silver nanoparticles is influenced by factors such as dose, cell/organ type, and particle type. It also suggests that lethal-dose silver nanoparticles can cause severe damage to the pancreas and increase blood glucose levels in the early phase of exposure.

Surface functionalisation-dependent adverse effects of metal nanoparticles and nanoplastics in zebrafish embryos

Iris Hansjosten et al.

Summary: The increasing use of manufactured nanomaterials in consumer products and industrial applications has raised concerns about potential impacts on human and ecosystem health. There is an urgent need for high throughput testing in nanotoxicology to predict hazards. Zebrafish embryos have emerged as a valuable model organism for studying nanotoxicity due to their characteristics for microscopy-based screening.

Eco-corona formation on the nanomaterials in the aquatic systems lessens their toxic impact: A comprehensive review

Lokeshwari Natarajan et al.

Summary: Recent studies have highlighted the significant impact of nanosized materials, particularly plastics, on aquatic ecosystems, with biofilms playing a crucial role in the existence and implications of these pollutants. The binding of Extracellular Polymeric Substances (EPS) forms an eco-corona on these particles, altering their density and surface charge. Understanding the interactions of algal EPS with pollutants and their impact on toxicity is essential for mitigating the environmental effects of these materials.

Summary: The widespread use of engineered nanoparticles in consumer products has resulted in their increased presence in natural water systems. The transformation rates and physicochemical properties of ENPs are primarily influenced by interactions with natural organic matter, as well as parameters related to water chemistry and hydrodynamics. Future nanomanufacturing processes should consider health, safety, and environmental impacts while maintaining the functionality of consumer products.
