Bottom-up Construction of Xylan Nanocrystals in D methyl Sulfoxide

Zhuojun Meng et al.

Summary: A new type of polysaccharide nanocrystal with anisotropic nanoflake shape emerged from heat-induced crystallization of wood-based xylan in a dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) dispersion. The dimensions of these xylan nanocrystals were controlled by crystallization conditions, and DMSO molecules played a vital role in stabilizing the crystalline structure. The manipulation of temperature, concentration, and incubation time provided pathways for the formation of size-adjustable nanocrystals.

Exceeding high concentration limits of aqueous dispersion of carbon nanotubes assisted by nanoscale xylan hydrate crystals

Shanyong Wang et al.

Summary: Surface modified carboxymethylated xylan hydrate crystals with great amphiphilic and rheological properties were produced through appropriate control of degree of substitution. Nanoscale CmXhc showed an ability to disperse multi-walled carbon nanotubes in water with a high CNT concentration of 40 mg/mL and a dispersion efficiency of 91.7%, making it a potential conductive paper coating or printing ink.
