Effect of medium energy He+, Ne+ and Ar+ ion irradiation on the Hf-In-C thin film composites

Antonino Cannavo et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that thin films of Hf-In-C formed a mixture of different binary and ternary phases, including nanostructured Hf2InC and oxides of metallic elements. Irradiation with light ions (He+) had minimal effect on the composites, while heavy ions (Ne+, Ar+) led to significant changes in all monitored parameters, especially for Ar+ ions, causing an overall collapse of the sample structure. Despite their high tolerance to light ions, Hf-In-C composites showed limited resistance to medium energy heavy ions.

Atomic Pathways of Solute Segregation in the Vicinity of Nanoscale Defects

Samik Mukherjee et al.

Summary: This study using GeSn semiconductor as a model system reveals the atomic-level details of solute behavior near a dislocation before surface segregation in strained, metastable thin layers. The migration of solute atoms towards dislocations during the initial phase separation leads to an increase in Sn concentration and density of atomic clusters.

Surface morphology and mechanical properties changes induced in Ti3InC2 (M3AX2) thin nanocrystalline films by irradiation of 100 keV Ne+ ions

Snejana Bakardjieva et al.

Summary: This study investigates the structure and mechanical properties of Ti3InC2 thin nanocrystalline films produced by ion beam sputtering and irradiation, revealing that the structure and chemical composition remain intact at lower irradiation fluences but show significant morphological instability at higher fluences. The research suggests potential applications in extreme environments, such as nuclear facilities, but emphasizes the need for further study on the synthesis of high-quality, dense, and homogeneous Ti3InC2 thin nanocrystalline films.

In Situ Local Oxidation of SnO Induced by Laser Irradiation: A Stability Study

Antonio Vazquez-Lopez et al.

Summary: In this study, semiconductor tin oxide (II) (SnO) nanoparticles and plates were synthesized at room conditions via a hydrolysis procedure. The controlled oxidation process from SnO to SnO2 was studied, and insights were gained through photoluminescence and Raman spectroscopy. Finally, a tailored spatial SnO/SnO2 micropatterning was achieved with potential applicability in optoelectronics and sensing devices.

Solvent engineered synthesis of layered SnO for high-performance anodes

Sonia Jaskaniec et al.

Summary: Batteries are the most common form of energy storage, with a need for high-performance electrochemically active materials for lithium and sodium ion batteries. Tin(II) oxide has emerged as a promising electrode material, with a study on tailoring size and shape of microparticles by changing solvent nature and understanding the complex relationship between wet-chemistry synthesis conditions and resulting nanoparticle morphology. High-level electronic structure theory is employed to enhance understanding of the underlying chemical mechanisms, allowing for the prediction of thermodynamically favored crystal shape and surface-weighted work function, leading to significantly enhanced electrochemical performance for specific synthesis conditions.

Grain size effect on the radiation damage tolerance of cubic zirconia against simultaneous low and high energy heavy ions: Nano triumphs bulk

Parswajit Kalita et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of grain size on the radiation tolerance of materials when simultaneously exposed to low energy and high energy particles. The results show that downsizing from bulk to nano dimension enhances radiation damage tolerance, which is interpreted within the framework of the thermal-spike model. This research not only provides fundamental insights into how grain size/grain boundary density mediates the radiation response of a material to simultaneous irradiations, but also lays the groundwork for potential application of nano-crystalline materials in the nuclear industry.
