Influence of different polymer belts on lipid properties in nanodiscs characterized by CW EPR spectroscopy

Matthias Hoffmann et al.

Summary: The study compared the lipid properties of liposomes and polymer-encapsulated nanodiscs using DSC and CW EPR spectroscopy. The results indicated that all polymers broadened the main melting transition of DMPC, changed water accessibility within the lipid bilayer, and exerted additional constraints onto the lipids. The rotational mobility of spin-labeled lipids decreased with all polymers, with DIBMA showing less restraints possibly due to aliphatic side chains. The choice of solubilizing polymer is crucial for forming lipid nanodiscs for future research on lipid membranes and membrane proteins.

Molecular model of a sensor of two-component signaling system

While chemoreceptors have been shown to function in highly ordered arrays, much less is known about photoreceptors. Small-angle scattering (SAS) studies suggest that detergent-solubilized sensory rhodopsin II forms dimers at low salt concentration, which associate into trimers of dimers at higher buffer molarities. The trimer of dimers is tripod-shaped and the contacts occur through cytoplasmic regions, while transmembrane regions remain unconnected.
