Phytoremediation of Heavy Metals Extracted from Soil and Aquatic Environments: Current Advances as well as Emerging Trends

Rohit Kumar Verma et al.

Summary: Rapid industrial development and other anthropogenic factors have led to an increasing amount of heavy metal pollution in the atmosphere, posing severe threats to the ecosystem and human health. Phytoremediation, as an eco-friendly and cost-effective method, plays a crucial role in improving contaminated soil and water through the extraction and stabilization of heavy metals by plants.

Eradication of Fatal Textile Industrial Dyes by Wastewater Treatment

Rohit Kumar Verma et al.

Summary: Dyes are commonly found in trace amounts in the waste products of various industries. The adsorption efficiency of dye removal from wastewater makes it an ideal alternative to expensive treatment methods. The release of toxic cationic dyes from the textile industry poses a daunting issue due to environmental implications and adverse effects on human biology. While adsorbents like activated carbon effectively remove dyes from industrial wastewater, their cost limits widespread applications. The removal of dyes from water is crucial for reducing their toxic effects on the environment.

Trifolium repens L. regulated phytoremediation of heavy metal contaminated soil by promoting soil enzyme activities and beneficial rhizosphere associated microorganisms

Hai Lin et al.

Summary: The physiochemical properties of rhizosphere soil, enzyme activities, and associated microbial communities play crucial roles in modulating phytoremediation in heavy metal contaminated soil. This study examined the rhizosphere micro-ecological characteristics of phytoremediation in different contaminated soils and found that certain microbial species were significantly related to heavy metal accumulation while others promoted plant growth. The root-associated microbial community is important for regulating plant growth and heavy metal uptake, providing a clear strategy for improving phytoremediation efficiency.

Possible application of stable isotope compositions for the identification of metal sources in soil

Liuwei Wang et al.

Summary: Stable isotope measurements hold great potential for identifying metal sources in soil, with specific isotopic signals serving as key prerequisites for source allocation. In particular, zinc and cadmium isotopes are valuable for identifying combustion-related industrial sources, while uncertainties may arise from biogeochemical low-temperature fractionation of other elements. Isotope-based source identification, in combination with other analytical approaches, can offer more accurate results for understanding the temporal changes of metal accumulation in soil systems.
