Ternary hydroxyapatite/chitosan/graphene oxide composite coating on AZ91D magnesium alloy by electrophoretic deposition

R. Askarnia et al.

Summary: Ternary HA/chitosan/graphene oxide (GO) coating was successfully deposited on AZ91D magnesium alloy as bone implants. The addition of GO resulted in increased hardness, improved HA growth, decreased corrosion rate, and enhanced antibacterial properties of the composite coatings.

The Role of Antibacterial Metallic Elements in Simultaneously Improving the Corrosion Resistance and Antibacterial Activity of Magnesium Alloys

Zhensheng Lin et al.

Summary: Magnesium-based biodegradable alloys show excellent mechanical properties and bioactivity in orthopedic applications, but their fast degradation rate may hinder the healing process. Alloying with antibacterial elements or coatings can enhance corrosion resistance without compromising antibacterial activity.

Development of Lightweight Magnesium/Glass Micro Balloon Syntactic Foams Using Microwave Approach with Superior Thermal and Mechanical Properties

Akshay Padnuru Sripathy et al.

Summary: In this study, lightweight glass micro balloon (GMB)-reinforced Mg syntactic foams were synthesized using hybrid microwave sintering, resulting in MgMSFs with refined grain sizes, no secondary phases, and reasonably uniform distributions of reinforcement particles. The addition of GMB led to reduced coefficient of thermal expansion and improved ignition resistance, while increasing hardness. Ultimate compression strength, fracture strain, and energy absorption capabilities also increased, with the Mg-5GMB and Mg-20GMB composites showing the best performance compared to pure Mg. Overall, the developed MgMSFs exhibited superior specific strength compared to monolithic magnesium.

Utilizing Iron as Reinforcement to Enhance Ambient Mechanical Response and Impression Creep Response of Magnesium

Subramanian Jayalakshmi et al.

Summary: In this work, magnesium-iron (Mg-Fe) composites were designed and characterized for their microstructure and mechanical properties, showing that Mg-5Fe composite had the highest hardness, strength, and ductility. Factors influencing the performance of Mg-5Fe and other Mg metal-metal composites were presented and discussed, showcasing their potential as lightweight materials with high strength and ductility.

Effect of Ca Addition on Corrosion Behavior of Wrought AM60 Magnesium Alloy in Alkaline Solutions

Polina Metalnikov et al.

Summary: Magnesium (Mg) alloys have potential applications in improving fuel efficiency in automotive and aircraft industries due to their low density. However, the corrosion behavior of Mg and its alloys is a significant concern, and in this study, the addition of calcium (Ca) to wrought AM60 alloy was found to deteriorate corrosion resistance in a NaCl solution but improve it in the absence of Cl- ions. The study also discussed the impact of long-term immersion on corrosion behavior and alloy oxidation.

Fatigue Properties of AZ31B Magnesium Alloy Processed by Equal-Channel Angular Pressing

Ryuichi Yamada et al.

Summary: The use of stents to expand narrowed tubular organs like blood vessels can lead to late thrombosis, restenosis, and chronic inflammation when made from stainless steel. Biodegradable magnesium stents have been introduced to combat these issues, but suffer from poor ductility and fatigue performance. Further research is needed for new alloys and stent designs.

Antimicrobial Activity and Degradation of Superhydrophobic Magnesium Substrates in Bacterial Media

Alexandre M. Emelyanenko et al.

Summary: The study investigates the interaction between superhydrophobic coatings on magnesium-based alloys and bacterial dispersions, showing enhanced corrosion protection and inhibition of magnesium substrate degradation. Immersion of such coatings in bacterial dispersions leads to notable changes in sample morphology and the formation of biofilms and sodium polyphosphate films, ultimately providing a barrier against magnesium dissolution. Electrochemical data indicates a high level of anticorrosion protection for superhydrophobic samples in continuous contact with corrosive bacterial dispersions for 48 hours.
