Sabiha Parveen et al.

Summary: A copper-based bis(hydroxy naphthaldehyde) complex with axial mono aqua-coordination was synthesized and characterized using various spectroscopic techniques and X-ray crystallography. The complex showed efficient binding with ct-DNA and tRNA primarily via non-covalent interactions, with higher affinity for tRNA compared to ct-DNA. The complex exhibited selective cytotoxic potential on leukemia, cervical, and hepatoma cancer cell lines, as confirmed by SRB assay.

Forty Years after the Discovery of Its Nucleolytic Activity: [Cu(phen)2]2+ Shows Unattended DNA Cleavage Activity upon Fluorination

Carsten Luedtke et al.

Summary: Modifying the phen ligand can significantly reduce the nucleolytic activity of Cu-II complexes, but those with fluorinated substituents show excellent DNA cleavage activity. The nucleolytic activity of these complexes correlates well with their half-wave potentials. Cancer cell studies indicate cytotoxic effects of complexes with fluorinated ligands, while they are less toxic to healthy cells.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Second generation of Casiopeinas®: A joint experimental and theoretical study

Miguel Reina et al.

Summary: Three novel second generation Casiopeinas complexes were synthesized, characterized, and evaluated for their antiproliferative activity against HeLa and MCF-7 cancer cell lines. By replacing the usual negatively charged secondary ligand with a neutral bidentate ligand, the compounds showed improved hydrophilicity and antiproliferative activity. The study found that the [Cu(4,7-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline)(2AMB)(NO3)]NO3 complex was more effective than cisplatin against both cell lines, with structure-activity relationships influenced by molar volume or redox potential.
