Uptake and cellular effects of PE, PP, PET and PVC microplastic particles

Valerie Stock et al.

Summary: This study investigates the gastrointestinal uptake and effects of microplastic particles of different materials using human in vitro systems. The results show that the transportation of PE microparticles through the intestinal epithelium in vitro is material- and size-dependent, with excessively high concentrations inducing cytotoxic effects.

Occurrence, fate and removal of microplastics as heavy metal vector in natural wastewater treatment wetland system

Dhruba Jyoti Sarkar et al.

Summary: This study investigated a freshwater wetland system in Eastern India and found a high concentration of microplastics and toxic metals in treatment ponds and associated wastewater canals. The presence of microplastics poses a risk to aquatic biota, with potential contamination of fish. The removal efficiency of microplastics in the treatment ponds was estimated to be 53%.

Contamination by ≥ 6.5 μm-sized microplastics and their removability in a conventional water treatment plant (WTP) in Thailand

Dinuka Kankanige et al.

Summary: Plastic-contaminated drinking water is a global concern, with a focus on microplastics contamination in a conventional water treatment plant in Thailand. The study found that the water treatment plant had an overall removal efficiency of 67.6% to 57.2%, with a substantial number of microplastics still present in the treated water. The dominant sources of microplastics contamination were identified as raw water and internal contamination within the plant, posing a challenge to drinking water quality in Thailand.

Genotoxic and cytotoxic effects of polyethylene microplastics on human peripheral blood lymphocytes

Hayal Cobanoglu et al.

Summary: This study used the CBMN assay to determine the genotoxic and cytotoxic effects of microplastic on human peripheral lymphocytes, revealing both genomic instability and lack of cytotoxic potential in larger microplastic particles. Further investigation on smaller plastics and chronic effects on human population is recommended.

Microplastics removal efficiency of drinking water treatment plant with pulse clarifier

Dhruba Jyoti Sarkar et al.

Summary: Microplastics are recognized as common pollutants in aquatic environments that may have adverse effects on human health. A study evaluated the occurrence and removal efficiency of microplastics at different treatment stages in a typical DWTP with pulse clarification, showing good removal efficiency at the sand filtration stage and strong associations with other components in water. The results suggest that DWTPs with pulse clarification systems may have comparable microplastics removal efficiency to advanced DWTPs.

Unintended human ingestion of nanoplastics and small microplastics through drinking water, beverages, and food sources

Ninell P. Mortensen et al.

Summary: There is growing concern about the potential risks to human health from the unintentional ingestion of microplastics and nanoplastics, however, there is limited research on the smallest particles and their effects. Future studies should focus on the smallest plastic particles found in drinking water and food products to better understand their impact on human health.
