Extra storage capacity in transition metal oxide lithium-ion batteries revealed by in situ magnetometry

Qiang Li et al.

Summary: Although some transition metal oxide-based electrodes exhibit high storage capacities beyond theoretical values, the surface capacitance on metal nanoparticles involving spin-polarized electrons is consistent with a space charge mechanism. The phenomenon of anomalously high storage capacities in different metal oxides is still under debate, but in situ magnetometry has shown that surface capacitance plays a dominant role in providing extra capacity. This space charge mechanism can be generalized to a broad range of transition metal compounds, providing guidance for advanced energy storage systems.

Investigation on the Voltage Hysteresis of Mn3O4 for Lithium-Ion Battery Applications

Yi-Ting Lee et al.

Summary: In this study, Mn3O4 powder was investigated as an anode material for LIBs to explore the root cause of voltage hysteresis, which was found to be composed of reaction overpotential and intrinsic overpotential related to diffusion behaviors. The formation of disparate phase distribution during lithiation and delithiation was identified as the possible origin of Mn3O4 intrinsic overpotential. The results provide insights into reducing energy loss and improving diffusion behaviors to eliminate voltage hysteresis of conversion-based electrodes in lithium-ion batteries.

Jihyun Jang et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel strategy to increase the reversible capacity of electrode materials by altering the lithiation mechanism of transition metal oxides, exemplified by the conversion of MoO2 to CoMoO3. X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction revealed the amorphization of the host structure due to the conversion of CoO to Co and Li2O. The high initial Coulombic efficiency of CoMoO3 is attributed to the highly conductive Co and MoO2, enhancing electronic conductivity.

Polymorphic Effects on Electrochemical Performance of Conversion-Based MnO2 Anode Materials for Next-Generation Li Batteries

Hyunwoo Kim et al.

Summary: The study synthesized four different MnO2 polymorphs with controlled morphology to investigate their influences in conversion-based materials. Experimental results showed that spinel-phased MnO2 was formed during charge storage reactions for all samples, but the electrochemical performance varied based on the initial crystal structure. Among the polymorphs, lambda-MnO2 exhibited the highest reversible capacity of around 1270 mAh g(-1) due to its faster kinetics and structural similarity between cycled and pristine states. These findings suggest that polymorphs are an important factor in designing high-performance materials for next-generation rechargeable batteries.
