Pathophysiological mechanisms explaining poor clinical outcome of older cancer patients with low skeletal muscle mass

Stephanie M. L. M. Looijaard et al.

Summary: Low skeletal muscle mass is common in older cancer patients and is associated with poor clinical outcomes. Various pathophysiological mechanisms, including inflammation, glucose handling, mitochondrial function, protein status, and pharmacokinetics, may contribute to the association between low skeletal muscle mass and negative clinical outcomes. Further research is needed to explore the effects of altered myokine balance, glucose intolerance, and other factors on skeletal muscle mass in older cancer patients.

Ultrasound Shear Wave Elastography for Evaluation of Diaphragm Stiffness in Patients with Stable COPD A Pilot Trial

Jing-Hong Xu et al.

Summary: Skeletal muscle dysfunction is common in COPD, with respiratory failure being a common cause of death. This study investigated the use of ultrasound shear wave elastography (SWE) to measure diaphragmatic stiffness in COPD patients. The results showed that diaphragmatic shear wave velocity (SWV) was higher in COPD patients compared to healthy controls, and correlated with lung function and COPD assessment scores. Ultrasound SWE may be a useful tool for evaluating diaphragm stiffness in COPD patients.

Summary: Growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15) expression is induced by cellular stress, metformin, and exercise. Its effects on food intake and inflammation are mediated through specific receptors and signaling pathways, making it a promising target for the treatment of metabolic diseases such as obesity and diabetes.

Age-related alterations in muscle architecture are a signature of sarcopenia: the ultrasound sarcopenia index

Marco Narici et al.

Summary: The study introduced an ultrasound imaging method for diagnosing sarcopenia based on changes in muscle geometric proportions. The ultrasound sarcopenic index (USI) was proposed as a novel marker for the loss of muscle mass associated with sarcopenia, providing a useful 'signature of sarcopenia' and allowing for stratification of individuals according to muscle sarcopenia presence and severity. The USI was found to be a useful clinical tool for confirming the diagnosis of sarcopenia, with DXA-derived skeletal muscle index (SMI) showing significant correlation with USI.
