In vivo emergence of beige-like fat in chickens as physiological adaptation to cold environments

Rina Sotome et al.

Summary: This study provides evidence that chickens may develop beige-like fat in their subcutaneous neck fat tissue as a mechanism for thermogenesis and maintaining temperature homeostasis in cold environments. Cold-acclimated or T-3-treated chickens showed increased expression of avUCP gene and other markers associated with beige adipocytes, along with morphological changes in their white adipose tissues. This suggests that birds may have a physiological adaptation similar to mammalian thermogenesis through the formation of beige fat in response to cold exposure.
