Role of exercise on visceral adiposity after spinal cord injury: a cardiometabolic risk factor

Jacob A. Goldsmith et al.

Summary: VAT is closely associated with cardiometabolic disease risk in both able-bodied populations and individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). Exercise interventions, including aerobic and resistance training, are beneficial for improving health and reducing VAT mass by enhancing mitochondrial function, glucose effectiveness, and inflammatory signaling. Future research is needed to better understand how VAT negatively impacts health in SCI and develop rehabilitation protocols targeting VAT reduction in these individuals.

Anthropometric Prediction of Visceral Adiposity in Persons With Spinal Cord Injury

Ashraf S. Gorgey et al.

Summary: Research has shown that a majority of individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) develop neurogenic obesity-induced cardiometabolic syndrome. Obesity not only affects social and recreational activities, but also imposes additional socioeconomic burdens on individuals with SCI. Despite direct associations between central obesity and visceral adipose tissue (VAT) after SCI, the mechanistic role of central obesity in cardiometabolic health remains unclear in this population.
