Activation of the CaR-CSE/H2S pathway confers cardioprotection against ischemia-reperfusion injury

Ying Luo et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the role of the CaR-CSE/H2S pathway in I/R injury, showing that elevation of H2S improves cardiac function while CSE knockdown impairs it in rats. In I/R rats with CSE knockout, oxidative stress injury worsens, but increased H2S and CSE levels alleviate it, inhibiting cell apoptosis ability and expression of apoptosis-related proteins. These findings suggest that activation of the CaR-CSE/H2S pathway may provide a protective effect in cardiac I/R injury.

Mechanisms underlying pathological Ca2+ handling in diseases of the heart

Satadru K. Lahiri et al.

Summary: This article reviews the importance of precisely regulated intracellular Ca2+ signaling through various channels and transporters in cardiomyocyte contraction for maintaining normal cardiac rhythm and contractility. It also discusses the contribution of inherited or acquired defects in Ca2+ channel subunits to the development of heart diseases, along with recent insights into the role of protein phosphatase subunits and SPEG in atrial fibrillation, heart failure, and cardiomyopathies. Additionally, the review summarizes current drug therapies and new advances in genome editing as therapeutic strategies for cardiac diseases caused by abnormal intracellular Ca2+ signaling.

Summary: H2S, once considered toxic, is now recognized for its protective effects in cardiovascular activities. It plays a crucial role in cardiovascular homeostasis, with studies showing its downregulation in cardiovascular diseases. Preclinical studies have demonstrated its ability to prevent CVDs and improve heart function post heart failure.

Antioxidant Food Components for the Prevention and Treatment of Cardiovascular Diseases: Effects, Mechanisms, and Clinical Studies

Dan-Dan Zhou et al.

Summary: Intake of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and cereals, which are rich in antioxidants, can reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Experimental studies have shown that compounds like polyphenols and anthocyanins have beneficial effects on the cardiovascular system by improving blood pressure, lipid profile, and reducing inflammation. Clinical trials have confirmed the cardiovascular-protective effect of some antioxidant natural products.
