Patient and physician factors contributing to polypharmacy among older patients

Kathryn A. Martinez et al.

Summary: This study found that individual physicians varied in their prescribing practices, with factors such as female sex, higher BMI, Medicaid insurance, smoking status, comorbidities, and specialty care being associated with number of medications prescribed to older patients. Physician prescribing rates varied, with lower prescribing physicians performing better on quality measures such as medication reconciliation and hypertension control, and prescribing fewer potentially inappropriate medications. These findings suggest that interventions to reduce polypharmacy in older adults should focus on targeting high prescribing physicians rather than patient factors.

The effect of iron deficiency and anaemia on women's health

C. S. Benson et al.

Summary: Iron deficiency and anaemia are significant global health issues for women, with current definitions of anaemia being challenged by recent data. Women are at risk of developing iron deficiency due to menstrual loss, abnormal uterine bleeding, and pregnancy, which can lead to adverse outcomes for both mother and child. Further research is needed to improve understanding and treatment strategies for iron deficiency and anaemia in women.

Inferior control of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol in women is the primary sex difference in modifiable cardiovascular risk: A large-scale, cross-sectional study in primary care

Yael Rachamin et al.

Summary: This study found that there are sex differences in cardiovascular prevention, with women having lower rates of LDL-C assessment and higher measured values in both primary and secondary prevention. Women in primary prevention also displayed lower assessment frequencies and measured values of BP and HbA1c, while no sex difference was observed in secondary prevention. Additionally, age-dependent increases in measured values of LDL-C, BP, and HbA1c were greater in women than men.

Prevalence of adverse drug reactions in the primary care setting: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Widya N. Insani et al.

Summary: ADR is a significant issue in primary care, with a prevalence of 8.32% and a range of preventable cases from 12.35% to 37.96%. Cardiovascular system drugs are the most commonly implicated medication class. Factors such as ADR detection methods, age group, setting, and sample size contribute significantly to the heterogeneity of estimates.

Potentially inappropriate proton-pump inhibitor prescription in the general population: a claims-based retrospective time trend analysis

Leander Muheim et al.

Summary: This study revealed an increasing trend of inappropriate use of proton-pump inhibitors in the general population, with multimorbidity and drugs with bleeding risks identified as strong determinants of inappropriate use. Addressing prescriptions exceeding guideline recommendations could potentially reduce polypharmacy and enhance patient safety.
