Long-term potentiation in the hippocampal CA3 to CA1 synapses may be induced in vivo by activation of septal cholinergic inputs

Y. Dobryakova et al.

Summary: The role of cholinergic neurotransmission in the hippocampus is still debated, but recent studies indicate that septal cholinergic input could modulate the plasticity of CA3 to CA1 synapses. This study aimed to investigate the role of septal input in the development of long-term potentiation (LTP) in this synapse. The results showed that tetanization of the ventral hippocampal commissure (VHC) induced a larger increase in fEPSP amplitude compared to tetanization of the medial septal area (MSA). Elimination of septal cholinergic neurons abolished LTP development in both experimental series.

The effect of nerve growth factor on supporting spatial memory depends upon hippocampal cholinergic innervation

Wei Zheng Eu et al.

Summary: The research suggests that the effect of NGF on spatial memory is reliant on intact cholinergic innervations in the hippocampus. Adequate cholinergic targeting may be a critical requirement for successful use of NGF gene therapy of Alzheimer's disease.

Overexpression of Nerve Growth Factor in the Hippocampus Induces Behavioral Changes in Rats with 192IgG-Saporin-Induced Cholinergic Deficit

Yu Dobryakova et al.

Summary: The overexpression of NGF in the hippocampus of rats did not prevent the loss of cholinergic neurons caused by the immunotoxin, but it did improve motor performance in the Y-maze and beam walking tests. Additionally, NGF overexpression led to an increase in acetylcholine esterase activity compared to the control group.

Acetylcholine prioritises direct synaptic inputs from entorhinal cortex to CA1 by differential modulation of feedforward inhibitory circuits

Jon Palacios-Filardo et al.

Summary: Acetylcholine release in the hippocampus is crucial for the formation of new memories, with a preferential enhancement of sensory information from the entorhinal cortex. Cholinergic modulation reorganizes inhibitory networks in the hippocampal CA1 region, prioritizing inputs from the entorhinal cortex over those from the CA3 region. This is achieved through activation of a combination of M3 and M4 muscarinic receptors.
