Shotgun metagenomics reveals both taxonomic and tryptophan pathway differences of gut microbiota in major depressive disorder patients

Wen-tao Lai et al.

Summary: This study found changes in gut microbiota and the Trp pathway in MDD patients, with an increase in Bifidobacterium levels and decreased abundances of certain KEGG orthologies in the MiTBamp. A negative correlation was also observed between K01626 abundance and HAMD scores in the MDD group. The findings suggest that alterations in gut microbiota could potentially serve as biomarkers for distinguishing MDD patients from healthy controls.

Analysis of gut microbiota and intestinal integrity markers of inpatients with major depressive disorder

Pawel Liskiewicz et al.

Summary: The study found a significant correlation between gut microbiota and the severity of depressive symptoms, but they do not serve as predictors of symptomatic improvement during antidepressant treatment. Intestinal integrity and inflammation markers were associated with the response to treatment and symptom severity in patients with MDD. Additional studies are needed to confirm and expand on these findings.

Proteomics analysis of the gut-brain axis in a gut microbiota-dysbiosis model of depression

Yiyun Liu et al.

Summary: Recent research suggests that the gut microbiota may play a role in the onset of depression through the gut-brain axis, although the exact mechanism remains unclear. This study transplanted gut microbiota from MDD patients into germ-free mice to induce depression-like behaviors, resulting in altered protein expression levels in multiple tissues of the gut-brain axis. Gene ontology analysis indicated that changes in the protein network primarily involved metabolic processes and inflammatory responses.

Regulation of Neurotransmitters by the Gut Microbiota and Effects on Cognition in Neurological Disorders

Yijing Chen et al.

Summary: Emerging evidence suggests that gut microbiota plays a crucial role in regulating brain activity and cognitive functions through the microbiota-gut-brain axis. The mechanisms by which gut microbiota regulate neurotransmitter production, transportation, and functioning are not well understood, nor are the effects of these interactions on normal brain functions and cognition. Dysbiosis of the microbiome can adversely affect cognitive function, particularly in neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.

Gut Microbiome Composition Associated With Major Depressive Disorder and Sleep Quality

Qi Zhang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the gut microbiota composition and sleep quality of patients with MDD, finding that Dorea was associated with depression and sleep quality, while Intestinibacter was more closely related to sleep problems. Gut microbiota alterations may potentially serve as biomarkers and treatment targets for sleep quality in MDD patients.
