Impact of electrochemical and mechanical interactions on lithium-ion battery performance investigated by operando dilatometry

Philip Daubinger et al.

Summary: The demand for higher energy densities in lithium-ion batteries leads to increased utilization of space within the cell for electrodes, resulting in increased electrochemical/mechanical interactions and stress. Research on externally-induced mechanical stress and dilation of electrodes in lithium-ion batteries found that high pressure can accelerate degradation mainly at the graphite anode, especially with an uneven pressure distribution.

Electrochemically Stable In Situ Dilatometry of NMC, NCA and Graphite Electrodes for Lithium-Ion Cells Compared to XRD Measurements

Franz B. Spingler et al.

Summary: In this study, the thickness changes of electrodes during cycling were investigated using a dilatometry setup. The research found that electrode expansion does not necessarily correlate with the unit cell volume changes of its active materials in any meaningful way, and only by measuring the expansion of the full electrode can we fully understand and predict its behavior during cycling. The reliability of the dilation measurement and the electrochemical performance of the dilatometry setup were thoroughly validated and significantly exceeded those of related studies published in recent years.

Analysis of Intercalation/De-Intercalation of Li Ions Into/From Graphite at 0 °C via Operando Synchrotron X-ray Diffraction

Hiroyuki Fujimoto et al.

Summary: The charge/discharge reaction mechanisms of graphite negative electrodes in Li ion batteries were studied using operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction at 0 degrees C and 25 degrees C. The intercalation of Li ions at different temperatures resulted in different stage compounds and varying degrees of graphite expansion. The de-intercalation process did not follow the expected pattern at low temperatures.
