Oxidative depolymerization of lignins for producing aromatics: variation of botanical origin and extraction methods

Cedric Cabral Almada et al.

Summary: This study fully characterized lignin samples of varying botanical nature and extraction procedures, and successfully depolymerized lignin in the absence of catalysts. High amounts of aromatic compounds were recovered after optimizing the reaction conditions. The study also demonstrated the importance of lignin's structure and the extraction process in optimizing aromatic compound yields.

Catalytic hydrogenolysis of native and organosolv lignins of aspen wood to liquid products in supercritical ethanol medium

B. N. Kuznetsov et al.

Summary: Catalytic hydrogenolysis in supercritical ethanol using bifunctional catalysts such as Ru/C and Pt/ZrO2 enables the effective fractionation of aspen wood biomass into cellulose and liquid products enriched with propyl syringol and propyl guaiacol. The yield of alkyl derivatives of methoxyphenols is higher in the liquid products of wood compared to ethanol lignin hydrogenolysis. The catalysts also shift the molecular weight distribution of liquid products towards lower molecular mass according to GPC data.

Reductive or oxidative catalytic lignin depolymerization: An overview of recent advances

Dolores Bourbiaux et al.

Summary: Catalytic depolymerization of lignin can produce aromatic chemicals and BTX fuels, with high-added value chemicals like vanillin obtained under oxidative atmosphere, and alkylphenolics and BTX mainly observed under reductive atmosphere. The outcome of depolymerization strongly depends on the reaction conditions.

Supported-Metal Catalysts in Upgrading Lignin to Aromatics by Oxidative Depolymerization

Cedric Cabral Almada et al.

Summary: The study found that the gold catalyst tended to further oxidize the aromatics produced from lignin depolymerization, resulting in low yields of target molecules, while platinum-based catalysts enhanced yields by preserving the substructure of lignin. A kinetic model revealed that condensation reactions during lignin oxidation and degradation of aromatic compounds were the main limitations to achieving high product yields. Insights on lignin oxidation and the catalyst's role from this study would provide higher control over lignin valorization.
