Microwave subcritical water pre-treatment and enzymatic hydrolysis of geographical identification (GI) tag Indian black rice (Chakhao Poireiton) straw for fermentable sugar production

Kamaljit Moirangthem et al.

Summary: Black rice straw, after pre-treatment in a pressurised microwave reactor, showed significantly increased release of glucose and xylose after enzymatic hydrolysis, indicating improved digestibility. Black rice could be a potential feedstock for a combined biorefinery, producing food and nutraceuticals from grain and fermentable sugars for biofuels, comparable to white rice.

Study on two eco-friendly surface treatments on Luffa cylindrica for development of reinforcement and processing materials

Maria-Belen Martinez-Pavetti et al.

Summary: The study aimed to compare the effects of two low-cost and low-impact thermo-chemical treatments on Luffa cylindrica fibers, and to verify why different mechanical strengths are reached when using these treatments in the production of compressed earth blocks. The results showed that the sodium hydroxide treatment resulted in higher crystallinity than water treatment, but the effects of water treatment should not be ignored. By adjusting the water treatment time, more convenient results may be achieved.

A Preliminary Life Cycle Analysis of Bioethanol Production Using Seawater in a Coastal Biorefinery Setting

Abdelrahman S. Zaky et al.

Summary: Bioethanol as a transportation fuel has many advantages, but traditional production methods have drawbacks such as the food vs. fuel debate. Utilizing seawater for bioethanol production at coastal locations can significantly reduce environmental impact, particularly in terms of reducing water depletion.
