Subcortical shape alterations in major depressive disorder: Findings from the ENIGMA major depressive disorder working group

Tiffany C. Ho et al.

Summary: This study investigated the differences in subcortical shape between patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and healthy controls. The results showed that both adolescent-onset MDD and recurrent MDD patients had lower thickness and surface area in certain subcortical regions compared to healthy controls.

SPR perspectives: Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) Program: overcoming challenges to generate engaged, multidisciplinary science

Kaja Z. LeWinn et al.

Summary: The ECHO Program, funded by the US National Institutes of Health, brings together 69 cohorts and over 57,000 children to address key pediatric outcome areas with high public health impact. The program overcame challenges in launching by promoting transparency, team science, and stakeholder engagement, and is focused on generating impactful, solution-oriented research to improve children's health for future generations.

Risk in Relatives, Heritability, SNP-Based Heritability, and Genetic Correlations in Psychiatric Disorders: A Review

Bart M. L. Baselmans et al.

Summary: The genetic contribution to psychiatric disorders is observed through increased rates of disorders in relatives of those diagnosed with disorders, indicating a polygenic architecture with many contributing risk loci. Despite various risk factors, epidemiological evidence suggests that genetic contribution carries the highest risk burden. Genetic studies have identified thousands of DNA variants associated with psychiatric disorders, consistent with epidemiological observations.

Puberty Initiates Cascading Relationships Between Neurodevelopmental, Social, and Internalizing Processes Across Adolescence

Jennifer H. Pfeifer et al.

Summary: Adolescence is a critical period of transition, where hormonal and physical changes influence brain development, social cognition, and peer relations, all of which are linked to the risk of mood and anxiety disorders. Social processes play a crucial role in understanding how pubertal development drives neural and psychological changes that can lead to mental health vulnerabilities, particularly in adolescent girls.

Naturalistic Language Input is Associated with Resting-State Functional Connectivity in Infancy

Lucy S. King et al.

Summary: This study found that the quantity and quality of language input infants receive from their caregivers can impact the functional connectivity of language networks in the brain, particularly highlighting the importance of vocal interactions with caregivers in the development of infant brain function. Infants who engaged in more adult-infant conversational turns had lower connectivity in the posterior temporal language network, indicating the significance of interactive communication in early language development.

Defining Valid Chronic Stress Models for Depression With Female Rodents

Combined effects of genotype and childhood adversity shape variability of DNA methylation across age

Darina Czamara et al.

Summary: Studies on the impact of childhood adversity on DNA methylation (DNAm) are inconsistent, with joint effects of genotype and prenatal environment providing the best explanation for variability in DNAm at birth. In adults, interactions between genotype and childhood adversity show the strongest contribution to DNAm variability.

Associations of Early-Life Threat and Deprivation With Executive Functioning in Childhood and Adolescence A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Dylan Johnson et al.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the quantitative associations between early-life adversities and cognitive flexibility, inhibitory control, and working memory in young individuals. The findings suggest that early-life deprivation has a stronger association with inhibitory control and working memory domains compared to early-life threat. There were no significant differences in the association of threat and deprivation with cognitive flexibility.

Early Life Stress Predicts Depressive Symptoms in Adolescents During the COVID-19 Pandemic: The Mediating Role of Perceived Stress

Ian H. Gotlib et al.

Summary: This study found that severity of early life stress predicted levels of depressive symptoms during the pandemic, which were higher in females than males. Importantly, the association between early life stress and depression was mediated by adolescents' reported levels of stress, even after controlling for demographic variables. These findings highlight the importance of monitoring the mental health of vulnerable children and adolescents during the pandemic and targeting perceived stress in high-risk youth.
