Depression-like behavior is associated with lowerPer2 mRNAexpression in the lateral habenula of rats

Yang Li et al.

Summary: Circadian rhythm dysfunction is a primary symptom of depression and LHb's Per2 gene expression shows circadian differences, which could be related to depression-like behavior in a depression model.

Deconstructing the contribution of sensory cues in social approach

Alessandro Contestabile et al.

Summary: This study deconstructed key elements of social preference in mice and found the importance of social olfactory cues in approach behavior. It also showed that social odors activate dopaminergic neurons in a similar way as juvenile conspecifics, and that mice prefer exploring complex social stimuli over isolated sensory cues.

Stress undermines reward-guided cognitive performance through synaptic depression in the lateral habenula

Alvaro Nuno-Perez et al.

Summary: The study revealed that weighing alternatives during reward pursuit is a vital cognitive computation that, when disrupted by stress, can lead to aspects of neuropsychiatric disorders. Mice faced with choices between rewards and errors showed increased error choices and decreased glutamatergic neurotransmission onto LHb neurons under stressful experiences. This subcortical synaptic mechanism vulnerable to stress plays a key role in behavioral efficiency during cognitive performance.

Lateral Habenula Mediates Defensive Responses Only When Threat and Safety Memories Are in Conflict

Geronimo Velazquez-Hernandez et al.

Summary: The study found that the activity of the lateral habenula mediates defensive responses only when guided by competing threat and safety memories, and in this situation, pharmacological inactivation of the lateral habenula affects some defensive behaviors in rats.

Lateral hypothalamus orexinergic inputs to lateral habenula modulate maladaptation after social defeat stress

Dan Wang et al.

Summary: Chronic social stress can lead to psychological disorders such as anxiety and depression. The orexinergic system, specifically the circuit from LHA orexinergic neurons to the LHb, has been found to have antidepressant and anxiolytic effects in response to social stress. This provides new evidence for the role of the LHA orexin circuits in regulating mood and behavior under stress.

Output-Specific Adaptation of Habenula-Midbrain Excitatory Synapses During Cocaine Withdrawal

Joseph Clerke et al.

Summary: The study found that cocaine withdrawal induces discrete and opposing synaptic adaptations from the lateral habenula (LHb) onto ventral tegmental area (VTA) neurons in mice. Different subsets of VTA neurons receive varied synaptic changes in response to LHb input during cocaine withdrawal.
