Mechanical properties and self-healing capacity of Ultra High Performance Fibre Reinforced Concrete with alumina nano-fibres: Tailoring Ultra High Durability Concrete for aggressive exposure scenarios

Estefania Cuenca et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of alumina nano-fibres on Ultra High Performance Fibre Reinforced Cementitious Concrete. The results demonstrate the superior performance of alumina nano-fibres in enhancing the durability of the composite, primarily through promoting cement and binder hydration reactions to stimulate crack sealing and performance healing recovery.

Effect of chloride ingress on self-healing recovery of smart cementitious composite incorporating crystalline admixture and MgO expansive agent

Caihong Xue et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of chloride environment on the self-healing performance of pre-cracked cementitious composite. It was found that chloride ions changed the mineralogy of self-healing products, affecting crack closure ratio and mechanical strength recovery. Carbonation of crystals formed in cracks was accelerated with volume expansion, achieving rapid crack sealing but contributing little to mechanical performance recovery.

Crystalline Admixture as Healing Promoter in Concrete Exposed to Chloride-Rich Environments: Experimental Study

Estefania Cuenca et al.

Summary: In highly aggressive environments like marine settings, meeting the service life requirements for reinforced concrete structures specified by design codes can be challenging. Researchers have found self-healing concrete to be a promising solution for degradation issues in chloride-rich environments. Experimental studies have shown that the use of crystalline admixtures as healing stimulating agents can enhance compressive strength recovery and crack sealing ability in chloride-rich environments.

An overview of a twofold effect of crystalline admixtures in cement-based materials: from permeability-reducers to self-healing stimulators

Aline de Souza Oliveira et al.

Summary: This paper provides an overview of relevant studies on the enhancement promoted by crystalline admixtures (CAs) in cement-based materials, acting both as permeability reducers and self-healing stimulators. The main mechanisms of CAs, their impact in cementitious systems, and synergetic effects with other constituents are discussed. Conclusions highlight research needs and future works in this area.

Self-healing characterization of UHPFRCC with crystalline admixture: Experimental assessment via multi-test/multi-parameter approach

Francesco Lo Monte et al.

Summary: The Research Project ReSHEALience is investigating new advanced Ultra High-Performance Fibre-Reinforced Cement Composites with enhanced durability, particularly focusing on the phenomenon of self-healing. Different test setups were used to assess the self-healing capability in aggressive environments, showing that the adoption of strain-hardening cement composites significantly promotes self-healing phenomenon. The results indicate that self-healing is effective even after 1 month of curing.

Meta-Analysis and Machine Learning Models to Optimize the Efficiency of Self-Healing Capacity of Cementitious Material

Shashank Gupta et al.

Summary: Although concrete and cement-based materials possess self-healing capacity, the consistent incorporation of self-healing concepts into design strategies is lacking. This study aims to quantify the recovery of material performance through statistical models and artificial neural network (ANN), and to establish a correlation between mix proportions, exposure type, time, and crack width against self-healing indices. Enhanced self-healing efficiency is mainly influenced by factors such as exposure type, crack width, and the presence of healing stimulators, while parameters like fibers and Supplementary Cementitious Materials have less impact on autogenous self-healing. The study proposes a straightforward input-output model through design charts and ANN analysis to predict and evaluate the self-healing efficiency of cement-based materials.

Innovative Design Concept of Cooling Water Tanks/Basins in Geothermal Power Plants Using Ultra-High-Performance Fiber-Reinforced Concrete with Enhanced Durability

Salam Al-Obaidi et al.

Summary: The structure presented in this paper is designed as a prototype reservoir for collecting water from the cooling tower of a geothermal plant. It compares the performance of different materials and structural solutions, with a focus on Serviceability Limit States, particularly water tightness requirements. The performance is assessed through on-site observations and measurements, comparing it with a reference compartment made with ordinary reinforced concrete.
