Estimation of settling velocity using generalized reduced gradient (GRG) and hybrid generalized reduced gradient-genetic algorithm (hybrid GRG-GA)

M. Shivashankar et al.

Summary: This study describes the settling velocity phenomenon and proposes methods for its estimation. The accuracy of three previously proposed equations for settling velocity is also checked. The results show that the hybrid GRG-GA approach gives more precise results compared to other methods and equations.

A novel constrained dense convolutional autoencoder and DNN-based semi-supervised method for shield machine tunnel geological formation recognition

Honggan Yu et al.

Summary: A novel constrained dense convolutional autoencoder and DNN-based method for geological formation recognition in tunnel faces is proposed, showing superior performance compared to supervised soft methods. The method outperforms other approaches in terms of classification accuracy in two different tunnels, highlighting its significantly better generalizability.

Assessment of scouring around spur dike in cohesive sediment mixtures: A comparative study on three rigorous machine learning models

Manish Pandey et al.

Summary: This study assessed the scour depth variation with time around a vertical wall spur dike in cohesive sediment mixtures using soft computing techniques. Three novel machine learning techniques were developed for accurate prediction of scour depth, with the Gradient Boosting Decision Tree (GBDT) model outperforming the others. The sensitivity analysis showed that clay percentage and the ratio of cohesion to frictional angle of sediment mixture were the most effective variables in different scenarios.

Tunnel condition assessment via cloud model-based random forests and self-training approach

Mengqi Zhu et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel CRF model and a self-learning method to assess the inconsistency of metro tunnel health rates, improving predictive accuracy and stability, while reducing time and cost. Results show that the CRF outperforms random forests in predictions, even in small databases, and the improved CRF remains highly accurate when the ratio of labeled to unlabeled data is no lower than 1:11.4.

Predicting Slurry Pressure Balance with a Long Short-Term Memory Recurrent Neural Network in Difficult Ground Condition

Qiang Wang et al.

Summary: The safety of tunneling with shield tunnel boring machines relies heavily on tunnel face pressure. A model based on deep learning, specifically using LSTM recurrent neural network, is proposed for predicting tunnel face pressure accurately, especially in challenging geological conditions. The LSTM-based SPE prediction model shows promising results in predicting face pressure.
