Exploring the Role of Reservoir Storage in Enhancing Resilience to Climate Change in Southern Europe

Alfredo Granados et al.

Summary: Recent trends indicate decreasing streamflow discharge and increasing interannual variability in many rivers of Southern Europe, which may worsen water scarcity issues in the region. Reservoir storage plays a crucial role in overcoming variability and enhancing water availability in semiarid climates, and increasing storage capacity can attenuate the reduction of water availability under climate change projections.

Assessment of the Impact of Small Hydropower Plants on the Ecological Status Indicators of Water Bodies: A Case Study in Lithuania

Laima Cesoniene et al.

Summary: The impact of small hydropower plants on water quality indicators was found to be insignificant, but they do affect the abundance and biomass of fish. The number of Ephemeroptera (mayflies), Plecoptera (stoneflies), and Trichoptera (caddisflies) taxa is influenced by the concentration of nitrogen and suspended solids.

Modelling of the Discharge Response to Climate Change under RCP8.5 Scenario in the Alata River Basin (Mersin, SE Turkey)

Umit Yildirim et al.

Summary: This study used the hydrological model HYPE to investigate the impacts of climate change on the hydrological response of a Mediterranean mesoscale catchment, showing an increase in annual mean temperature in the basin and higher discharge generation in the beginning and middle of the century scenarios. However, a significant decrease in discharge is projected for the end of the century due to increased evapotranspiration and reduced snow depth in the upstream area.

Large-Scale Hydrological and Sediment Modeling in Nested Domains under Current and Changing Climate

Alena Bartosova et al.

Summary: Continental and global dynamic hydrological models have become important tools for large-scale analyses, with the HYPE model being one example. This study compared historical simulations and assessed future impacts on hydrological indicators using different-scale HYPE applications. The findings suggest that the global model can provide comparable information on climate change impacts to the continental and national models, despite variations in spatial patterns.

River Flow Alterations Caused by Intense Anthropogenic Uses and Future Climate Variability Implications in the Balkans

Christina Papadaki et al.

Summary: This study evaluates environmental flow and potential hydrological alterations in the extended Drin river basin, with results showing significant impacts of climate variability/change and anthropogenic uses on river flow. Discussion and decisions on sustainable water resources management issues for the development of a Drin Basin Management Plan in the future are crucial based on the results from this preliminary analysis.
