Vehicle Routing Optimisation in Humanitarian Operations: A Survey on Modelling and Optimisation Approaches

Wadi Khalid Anuar et al.

Summary: The field of humanitarian operations is expanding due to an increase in disasters worldwide. Operations Research (OR) plays a crucial role in alleviating the suffering of disaster victims. This paper focuses on the Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP) within humanitarian operations, reviewing and classifying 123 papers from the past decade, discussing modeling challenges, established solution approaches, and proposing machine learning solutions for future applications.

Temporal evolution in social vulnerability to natural hazards in Chile

Nicolas C. Bronfman et al.

Summary: The study reveals the dynamic spatial and temporal variations in social vulnerability in Chile over the past two decades. Factors contributing to social vulnerability interact in a way that creates heterogeneous distribution throughout the territory. Regions that were highly vulnerable at one point in time may see changes in vulnerability levels over different periods, with factors like disability and immigration emerging as significant elements towards the end of the study period.

A column generation based heuristic for the generalized vehicle routing problem with time windows

Yuan Yuan et al.

Summary: The GVRPTW aims to minimize total traveling cost while satisfying various constraints. A set covering formulation and column generation based heuristic are proposed in this paper, which successfully generated high-quality solutions within short computation times for instances with up to 120 clusters.

Robust Design of Relief Distribution Networks Considering Uncertainty

Moddassir Khan Nayeem et al.

Summary: In the post-disaster response phase, an efficient relief distribution strategy is crucial, but secondary disasters can increase the challenges. An optimization model is proposed to address uncertainties in RDCs' capacity and relief demand, aiming to minimize costs and commodity shortages.

Tsunami Modeling in the South American Subduction Zone Inferred from Seismic Coupling and Historical Seismicity

Miguel Medina et al.

Summary: The study shows that there is great variability in tsunami run-up distribution along the Nazca-South America subduction zone, with some of the most affected areas including Valparaiso in Chile and Lima in Peru. Vulnerability to tsunami run-up amplification was identified in 17 coastal locations, as well as instances of regional amplification due to tsunami directivity and coastal barriers. The conclusion is that tsunami hazard remains high along the coast of South America, even in areas where significant earthquakes have occurred recently.
