Material efficiency and its contribution to climate change mitigation in Germany : A deep decarbonization scenario analysis until 2060

Stefan Pauliuk et al.

Summary: Germany has successfully reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 35% since 1990, with a national goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. While energy efficiency measures have been established, further reductions will require a focus on material efficiency, such as product lightweighting, material reuse, remanufacturing, and product lifecycle extension. Sector-specific research has shown significant emissions savings potential through material efficiency strategies, and implementing such measures could further reduce emissions by 19-34% in passenger vehicles, 27-31% in residential buildings, and 14-19% in non-residential buildings by 2050.

Projected material requirements for the global electricity infrastructure - generation, transmission and storage

S. Deetman et al.

Summary: The analysis forecasts a rapid growth in demand for most materials in the electricity sector in the coming decades, driven by increased electricity demand and a shift towards renewable electricity technologies. Under climate policy assumptions, the annual demand for various materials in the electricity sector is expected to continue growing towards 2050.

The coming wave of aluminum sheet scrap from vehicle recycling in the United States

Yongxian Zhu et al.

Summary: The study estimates the timing, scale, and composition of high value recycling of aluminum alloys, finding that aluminum ABS scrap from aluminum sheet intensive vehicles presents significant opportunities for U.S. recyclers. Through a Markov chain model, it is found that the majority of this scrap will be available for domestic processing in the U.S.

Uncovering the in-use metal stocks and implied recycling potential in electric vehicle batteries considering cascaded use: a case study of China

Hui Yang et al.

Summary: As new energy vehicles continue to proliferate, in-use electric vehicle batteries are becoming a key component of urban mining. The metal stocks in EVBs show a significant increase from 2009 to 2019, with high recycling potential and environmental benefits. Under different scenarios, the metal stocks are projected to continue to rise, indicating the importance of sustainable management and recycling practices for EVBs.

Aluminum material flow analysis for production, consumption, and trade in China from 2008 to 2017

Qiangfeng Li et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the material flows of China's aluminum resources during different stages of its life cycle using material flow analysis (MFA). The results indicated an increasing trend in aluminum consumption in China initially, followed by a gradual decrease. The study also found that China imports large amounts of raw materials for aluminum processing and exports a significant portion of aluminum-containing commodities produced domestically to other countries. Additionally, the research highlighted the importance of reducing material loss during the processing of raw materials, particularly in the alumina production stage, to alleviate pressure on primary aluminum sources.

Copper demand forecasts and predictions of future scarcity

C. Hunt et al.

Summary: This study examines future predictions of copper demand and reserve assumptions, finding that the anticipation of a future copper shortage is mostly due to the assumption of fixed reserves rather than overestimations of demand. Some models did not consider the future availability of copper.

Bridging energy and metal sustainability: Insights from China's wind power development up to 2050

Kaipeng Ren et al.

Summary: The rapid expansion of renewable energy in China due to concerns over anthropogenic climate change and sustainable development will lead to a significant increase in metal demand for wind power development. Copper and nickel will face greater supply pressure compared to aluminum and steel, with rare earth elements also experiencing substantial growth in demand. Recycling is expected to play a crucial role as a secondary supply of metals for Chinese wind power after 2050.

The role of socio-economic material stocks for natural resource use in the United States of America from 1870 to 2100

Jan Streeck et al.

Summary: Globally, over half of extracted materials are used to build and maintain material stocks, with the United States being one of the largest consumers. Analysis of material use in the US from 1870 to 2100 shows that 40% of historical domestic material consumption was used for stock building and maintenance, with significant impact on material demand.
