Innovative recycling or extended use? Comparing the global warming potential of different ownership and end-of-life scenarios for textiles

Jarkko Levanen et al.

Summary: The implementation of circular economy thinking has led to the development of innovative recycling technologies and business models, but the implications of these technologies and models remain largely unclear, posing a high risk of rebound. It is found that many new CE innovations come with a high rebound risk, and existing practices carry similar, yet smaller risks.

Reducing environmental impacts from garments through best practice garment use and care, using the example of a Merino wool sweater

Stephen G. Wiedemann et al.

Summary: The study explored the potential to reduce environmental impacts through best practices in garment care and increased garment use. Results showed that washing less frequently, using more efficient washing machines, reducing the use of machine dryers, and increasing the number of garment wears all contributed to significant reductions in environmental impacts. Best practice care, focusing on maximizing garment use and minimizing care practices, resulted in a substantial reduction of impacts across all indicators. Worst-case scenarios, on the other hand, dramatically increased environmental impacts.

Environmental Consequences of Closing the Textile Loop-Life Cycle Assessment of a Circular Polyester Jacket

Gregor Braun et al.

Summary: The European Union is aiming to transform the textile industry with the European Green Deal and Circular Economy Action Plan, advocating for more sustainable products. Initiatives like wear2wear™ are striving to achieve closed-loop systems for polyester textiles. A Life Cycle Assessment study has shown that thoughtful circular economy system design can lead to significantly lower environmental impacts.
